Aloha from NYC - RWA National Convention

Aloha from NYC!   Today is another busy day as I join Mary Gramlich, The Reading Reviewer, to:

- tour of the NYC offices for Grand Central Publishing
- volunteer at the RWA Literacy Signing
- travel back to the Regency Era at the Beau Monde Soiree

So, if you were me, what would you:

- Ask a publisher?

- Buy at the the Literacy Signing?

- Wear to the Regency party (historical clothes or a modern party dress)?

One randomly selected commenter will win a NYC souvenir!  All readers are welcome to comment.  Comments are open through Saturday, July 2, 2011.   I'll post the winner on Sunday, July 3.

Mahalo,

Kim in NYC

  1. I would probably buy a book from Linda Howard. She's one of my favorite authors. Have fun in NYC, Kim. Don't enter me for this giveaway.

  2. Ask a publisher? Paper or plastic?

    - Buy at the Literacy Signing? Everything in my line of sight.

    - Wear to the Regency party (historical clothes or a modern party dress)? If I had a gorgeous gown I would wear that - not modern if I could help it.

  3. Tough Questions Kim!! Let me see!!

For the publisher - do you think contemporaries are making a comeback?

Literacy Signing -- Oh my stars buy everything that your budget will let you.

Regency Party --- A beautiful gown with a mask!

  4. For the publisher - do you have an overabundance of great books to choose from or not enough?
For the signing - I too would have a hard time choosing!
For the party - If I could find a nice regency outfit, I think that would be fun!!

  5. Oh, I'm so jealous! I hope you guys have an awesome time.

I'd ask the big publishers that follow the agency model for e-book pricing whether they're going to lower their prices. There are so many books I want to read in digital, but I'm not going to pay the same amount that I would for a trade paperback. That just irritates me.

I'd buy some of Nailini Singh's books, since I hear they're awesome.

And if I went to a Regency party, I would totally dress up in a pretty gown with an empire waist, because I love that sort of thing.

Keep us posted on the goings on there!

  6. Hi Kim,

have a great time in NYC.

Publisher: Why are the ebook prices nearly the same as the print books?

    Literacy: I don't where I would start.

Regency party: A beautiful gown with a mask.

  7. Kim--Hope you're having a great time!

Publisher: Are we seeing the slow demise of print books? If so, what can/should the industry do about it?

Literacy Signing: Everything you can afford and that you can get home!

Party: I'd like to say a beautiful regency dress, but knowing me, the whole outfit would be based on the most comfortable shoes I could wear!

  8. Have fun in NYC, Kim!

Publisher: I refuse to pay more than $4 for an ebook, something that I don't actually own but "have the right to read". What is with that? If I can't resell a book to the used bookstore or give it to a friend or the library, what good is a full-priced ebook to me? And agree on a format already!

Literacy Signing: until I max out my credit cards.

Regency Party: As much as I would love to wear historically accurate clothing, it is summer in NYC so I most likely would wear something more modern so I'd be more comfortable.

  9. Have a great time Kim...it sounds so exciting. I have never been to New York but maybe one of these days I will get to see that fascinating city. I would also ask a publisher why they think that an e-book should warrant the same price as my beloved print books (and what has happened to all of the competent editors)? I just discovered Dianne Sylvan so I would probably look for her Shadow World books and...I never really dressed up for Halloween so I would probably want to dress in period clothes although I don't think I would have the bosom to do justice to those beautiful ballgowns! Take pictures of whatever you wear!

  10. whoooaaa...have a fun in NYC , Kim !! *jealous* lol !

i've never been to any conventions before. so i would be so excited and no idea what i'm gonna do :P

    - Ask a publisher?
: I'm one of the person who prefer print books than e-books, so is there any possibility that the price will go low for print books ? (okay, i'm not so sure about the currency though :) )

    - Buy at the the Literacy Signing?
: anything as long as i still can afford to buy them !

    - Wear to the Regency party
: i would really like to wear one of historical clothes but is there any comfortable one to wear ? still, good shoes is my priority :)

  12. I'm so jealous of you right now! I wish I was in New York =(

As for what I'd ask a publisher - what does it take to publish a book?

I would buy any/all the books I could get my hands on! (Though I would go for my favorite authors' books before moving onto new authors).

And I would probably wearing something modern, unless I could find a cheap yet stunningly beautiful historical dress (and by cheap I mean a dress that costs less than what it would take to buy a used car).

  13. I just know you're having a blast! *waving*

Ask the publisher? What is the biggest "no-no" authors try to get by with?

Of course, my budget would be limited, so I would have to peruse the entire area before I made the very important purchases.

I would do my very best to wear authentic historical clothes to the party! It would most likely be the only time I would get that opportunity!

  14. Kim -

If I had a chance to talk to a publisher I would ask them what as readers what can we do to support new authors and in particular those who are trying to "make it" in the complex world continuing their books published.

When picking out what you will wear pick something comfortable and worry about new or period later. It's going to be a long night!

At the signing be sure to buy lots of books that you can't to read and then pick your favorites and get those authors on your blog so we can all find out more about them.

Most important is seize the day and have a wonderful time!

buy at the signing- Id buy a ton of books and goodies. I'd want everything! :P
wear to the Regency party- id wear a historical dress. there so beautiful. and its a fun dress up, who wouldnt want to have fun with that? and a mask would be pretty awesome!

  17. I would ask publishers why ebooks are not dramatically lower than print books for all books.

As far as what books to buy, I would buy everything that I could by my favorite authors then attack them, while doing some major fan-girl squeeling!

Have a great time. I am sooooo jealous!

  18. I would wear historical clothes. It's not something you get to do very often! lol

  19. I am so envious! I really wish I could be there too! I did go to NYC for Spring Break a year ago and had a blast. Have fun!!!

  20. I would definitely buy books and get them signed from all my favourite authors. Iwould also be on the lookout for new authors and trying them. What better way to learn about a new author and their books than asking them? :)
