Aloha to Terry Spear and DREAMING OF THE WOLF

Today is December 7 - the day of infamy that brought terror, destruction, heroism, and determination to Hawaii, the Pacific, and America.  Pearl Harbor become a rallying point for America to stand firm in our fight for freedom. Joining me today is Terry Spear - veteran, librarian, and author of DREAMING OF THE WOLF:

Award-winning author Terry Spear has written a dozen paranormal romance novels, with over 60,000 copies sold. She received Publishers Weekly’s Best Book of the Year in 2008 for Heart of the Wolf. A retired officer of the U.S. Army Reserves, Terry is a librarian by day. She lives in Crawford, Texas. For more information, please visit www.terryspear.com.

Kim: I read in your bio that you are “a retired lieutenant colonel in the US Army Reserves.” Can you share a special job, mission, or experience that made you say, “I'm glad I serve”?

Terry:  One of my jobs in the military was to consider soldiers for hardship discharges or compassionate reassignments. In either case, the soldier had someone who needed family care—a dying parent, a child that needed medical care that couldn’t be offered at the post we were stationed at and I really loved my job. I had to determine if the service member truly needed either a hardship discharge or compassionate reassignment based on medical reports, the medical commander’s recommendation, a minister’s recommendation where appropriate, and other recommendations, including the service member’s commander also, and the service member’s own heartfelt reasons for wanting the change in his or her duty status. I felt badly for the service member who was faced with such trials, but glad I could be of help in aiding them to get to where the service member needed to be for his or her peace of mind and for the ones they loved. One of my other duties as assigned was working with soldiers who needed help with their taxes. I have an MBA and loved to help any solider in need.

Kim:  You are also “a librarian by day.” Most readers would think this is heaven! What are the challenges and rewards of being a librarian?

Terry:  Have to laugh here. I love books and I love my coworkers and we have some of the sweetest patrons in the world. But though most of us love to read, reading is not an option while we work, which is a crying shame! We’re busy from the time we walk into the building, counting money, shelving books, checking in books, pulling holds for patron requests, turning on the 24 computers and myriads of other printers and copiers, and sending off expired holds to the next patron on the list. And that’s just in the first hour before we open. After that it’s a constant barrage of reference questions (we have no reference librarians, so we are it), from what is the date of the next full moon (did the person know I write about werewolves and have a handy dandy lunar calendar available?), which is more valuable—24K or 14K gold and the second call: How do you spell carat? Being a writer, and owner of both gold weights, I had a ready answer. But some are not so easy. How do you look up a medical condition that the patron has no clue how to spell? Google is my answer for nearly everything! Just as I use it in my own research for locations and wolf characteristics and even about jaguars for the latest book. But that’s only a fraction of what we do! Helping patrons to find books, checking them out, and receiving fine money are some of the jobs we do. When someone doesn’t want to pay a fine and she or he gets really nasty? I wish I had one of my wolf friends at my side. :)

Kim
:  You live in Crawford, Texas. What is your favorite sight, smell, and sound from your town? Any Presidential sightings?

Terry:  I love when the corn is so tall I feel I’m in a jungle. And I love listening to the Texas breeze blowing through the corn as if it were a forest. It’s quiet out where we live, with only the occasional car driving by and the wind shaking the oak trees around my home. The air was dusty and dry and smelled that way when we were deep in the draught. But refreshing rains made it smell like a bit of heaven, sweet, and wet, and cleansed. When the president lived here, we heard jet planes flying overhead and knew someone had again violated the airspace around the ranch. And we knew he was in residence. Most of the time the cavalcades would go a different direction from where we lived. But once, black unmarked Suburbans with flashing lights attached to their bumpers forced me off the road. Then the regular traffic following them wouldn’t let me back on the road. My thought: I pay my taxes too!

I was glad the president and his visitors used a different road most of the time to go to the ranch! Otherwise it was business as usual in the area surrounding there.

Kim:  What inspired your Werewolf series and your newest book, DREAMING OF THE WOLF?

Terry:  I was a vampire writer, but breaking into the market was difficult. So I thought about another very misaligned group of characters—the werewolf. Basing werewolves on real wolves rather than beasts, I envisioned that with werewolves, some are good and some are bad. Just like with humans. It’s not all black and white. I developed a love of wolves from reading Jack London’s wolf tales—White Fang and Call of the Wild—when I was a kid. That’s why I wanted to treat my werewolves as real wolves, not horror-kind of beasts.

An ex-father-in-law doctored the Mob, and one of my great grandfather’s brother-in-laws had a run in with the Mob, both in Chicago. So I’ve always been fascinated with the oral stories. I also watch a lot of bounty hunter and cop shows (real life), so these inspired me to have a heroine who was a bounty hunter, trying to turn in a couple of mobsters who had murdered her mother. Jake Silver isn’t looking for anything but a place to consign some of his wildflower photography, but when he spies Alicia taking pictures of a vehicle’s license plate, he’s intrigued. Unable to get into the art gallery, he decides to join Alicia in a restaurant across the street and that is the turning point in his life. How can a wolf get mixed up with a female human bounty hunter? Easily! The problem is disengaging from the relationship. But when he begins to dream about her, and she about him, there’s no turning back.

Kim:  What's next for Terry Spear?

Terry:  I’m currently working on Tom’s story in Silence of the Wolf, the 11th book in the wolf series Book 9, A SEAL in Wolf’s Clothing, and book 10, Highland Wolf in Paradise, will be in stores in 2012 and 2013!

I also have a brand new series beginning in Fall 2012 about shapeshifter Jaguars! The first book is already written, and I’m currently writing the second, which will be about Maya, the sister to the hero in the first jaguar book. No final titles yet!

Thanks so much for having me on your blog! Hope everyone has a chance to read about wolves—werewolves, that is, who are a little more human than the real ones!
The Jaguar maybe a shape shifter ....
... but is is also a road hugger!

Mahalo, Terry, for joining us today, especially today, as we remember those who gave us the freedom to write and read as we choose.   Sourcebooks is giving away two print copies of DREAMING OF THE WOLF:

A fierce hunter…
Alicia Greiston is a no-nonsense bounty hunter determined to bring a ring of mobsters to justice. Her dogged pursuit of the crime family has forced her to avoid relationships—any man would only become a target for retribution. Luckily, Jake Silver is more than a man, and his instincts are telling him to stop at nothing to protect her.

An animal passion…
However, the mob isn’t entirely human either, and soon Alicia must flee for her life. When Alicia and Jake’s passion begins to spill over into their dreams, Jake learns he will have to do more than defend her—he’ll have to show his mate the way of the wolf.

  1. I'm thinking of all the Pearl Harbor vets today. Occasionally I see one in our town...he has the Pearl Harbor Survivor license plate and wears a USS Arizona hat. As for the paranormal question, I think I'll have to pick wolves because I've always loved dogs/wolves. Though I will say I too am intrigued about the jaguar series!

  2. I absolutely love shifters, but wolves and dragons will always be my favorites. Can't wait to hear more about Terry's jaguar series

  3. Pearl Harbor will be in my thoughts today. Right now I am into shape shifters. Would love to read her jaguar series.

  4. Shall I be on the lookout for werewolves on the beaches?!?1 I like dragons but the jaguars sound interesting!

  5. Fun interview! Sounds like Terry had plenty of "research material" for her new book. Wouldn't it have been fun to interview Dog the Bounty Hunter - in Hawaii no less?!?

I love dragons but now tempted by Terry's werewolves.

  6. Thanks, Linda! A lot of dog lovers/wolf-dog/wolf owners have shared with me pictures of their pets, loving that the packs seem to describe their own beloved "packs." It's really neat. I post them when they send them to me.

My dad was shot down on his 13th mission and was a POW in Germany for 16 months, 6 foot tall and weighing less than a 100 pounds when he was finally freed. He was only 16, lying about his age to help free the world. My son is now a navigator in the AF. My hat's off to all veterans of all wars and those who served during peacetime because no one knows when they will be serving in wartime when they join up.

Thanks about the jaguar series! I'm really excited about that too. They are not wolves, so the issue of them not being pack type animals, instead loners, was trickier to deal with. They don't take a mate for life, but overlap a territory with a number of females, keeping them all satisfied. LOL Ahem. So the shifters, if they're to be heroic, have to deviate a bit!

    Thanks, Dannyfiredragon!

    Thanks, Debby!

The second Highland wolf book is set in the Grand Cayman Islands, and definitely, the wolves have taken over the beaches!

Thanks, Sue! I'd interview Dog the Bounty Hunter in Hawaii! Been there twice. Loved it both times!

  7. I'll read any sort of shifter/urban fantasy novel but wolf/dragon/cats are my top 3.

One of my past life memories has to deal with world war two, but I couldn't say whom I was. The only thing I remember is how I died and the current name of the person I was with at the time. It's one of those that I barely have a time frame for.

I have memories of a few others, 3 with names/dates/location and 1 with just location, no dates/names or much else. I remember dying, several times, the majority of those times were not anything resembling peaceful. *closes her eyes, remembering her death last time around* Those sort of deaths leave scars, and the scars can take decades to heal, if they ever do. A mere year or two betwixt lives is not nearly enough time.

  8. Great interview!!

Had an uncle that signed up for the Navy when he was only 17 (parents had to sign for him) and was at Pearl Harbor...thanks to those veterans and all the others who have served then and now for keeping our shores safe.

Fav shifters? Wolves, but cats definitely too! Looking forward to this and following books and definitely the new Jaguar series!

  9. Thank you to you and your family for your service. I tend to be a tiger person myself but enjoy all sorts of shifters. Happy Holidays to you and yours!

  10. Terry, Thank you for serving. It's very nice you're here on Pearl Harbor Day. I actually love Black Squirrel Shifter's and or Hummingbirds. Hey, Just pulling your leg. I love the Wolves and I love Tigers, Bears and Dragons. I know I'll love The Jaguars too.

  11. My first favorite monster has always been Vampires but coming in a close second is werewolves. I have been on a reading spree reading as many paranormals with these two monsters in them as I can and I don't see that slowing down anytime soon because there are so many great books in this genre to find and it looks like I just found another one!! woohoo, I love finding a new author who write the type of books I love to read.

  12. have enjoyed your books!

i got my grandaughter, monster high dolls, the daughter of the werewolf and daughter of dracula.

  13. Hi, Breila, how fascinating! Not that it would be something I'd want to have to really experience. My father's uncle, who was only 7 years older than him, so 23, died in Manilla as a prisoner of the Japanese.

Thanks, Cat, and thanks to your uncle who served! I'm still mulling over how I want to start the 2nd book in the jaguar series. :)

Elf, I love tigers too. :) And thanks about the service. :)

Too funny, Donna. Someone said they read a mongoose shifter story. Okay, mongoose, yes, but sexy hunk of a guy? Hmmm.... My first shifter story is a scifi that has a panther sister and a dragon brother...one of these days, I'll have to revise it and share it with the world. :)

Thanks so much, Blackroze! Haven't heard from you in eons! I'm thrilled you've loved both my werewolf and vampire books. Never heard of the monster high dolls!

  14. I love Vampires. They were my first and after all these years I'm still not tired of them. I just love that everyone puts their own spin on vampire mythology.

  15. For some unknown reason, Dog the Bounty Hunter entertains me. Perhaps it is because I love dogs. I also prefer werewolves in the paranormal menagerie. Terry is new to me and I look forward to reading her books!

  16. Add me to the list of vampire lovers. Congrats on your recent release Terry! I just started reading the galley of DREAMING OF THE WOLF and am thoroughly enjoying it.

During the D-Day parade in Fredericksburg when George Bush was still governor of Texas, he rode with his father in a jeep and my dad still has that picture of both Jr and Sr framed on the wall in his office. I thought that was pretty cool at the time and they even threw candy for us kids. lol.

  17. Oh, I think I like them all since I enjoy variety but if I had to choose, it definitely would be something in the cat family lol. Your covers are all so gorgeous!

  18. Thank you Terry, for your service and that of your family's. Your military job sounds like it would have been very rewarding! I really enjoyed this interview.

It's sort of weird. I like werewolves the best, but seem to have read more leopards or jaguars. Can your books be read as standalones or do they need to be read in sequence? I'll look forward to your new series so I can start at the beginning!

  19. Vampires are my favorite paranormal creatures. There is just something alluring about them. Although wolves are making a strong case.

    ReplyDelete
  20. My favorite is wolves and vampires! I jump between the two ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  21. Vampires really are my favorites. But for shifters I love big cats. Looking forward to her jaguar series.

  22. I LOVE this series, and I'm anxiously awaiting the new one next fall.

I love shifters of all flavors, and am really excited to see the cats coming into their own in this genre.

Thanks for the great review Kim!

  23. Danielle, you'll have to check out my vampire books then! I have Deadly Liaisons out, Huntress for Hire and Forbidden Love. :) I fell in love with Dracula when he was in a college play and I wanted to jump onto the stage and say, "Bite me! Me!" I was very shy so to feel that way was a big deal! From then on I was hooked! But I didn't want him to die! So I write my versions! HEA.

Pat, thanks so much! I hope you enjoy the series!

Thanks, Kati! I hope you love the rest of Dreaming!! :)

Thanks, Karen! I enjoyed being in the service. As to the series, they're stand alone titles, the first 4 books especially, but even so, I do have some character cameo appearances. Leidolf is in all first 4 books before he has his own story in Seduced by the Wolf. :)

I agree. I love vampires too. But wolves are different. To me, vampires are suave, sexual creatures. I see them attending balls and the theater. Wolves are more to camp out, climb mountains, have a ho-down. Theater? No way!

    Chelsea, I do too. :)

Donnas, hope you love the jags!

Tammy, thanks so much! I can't wait for the first jag story to come out either. I can't wait for what they come up with on the cover. :)

And yes, thanks for the great review, Kim!

  24. I love all paranormals. Vampires are probably my favorites but I love shifters, demons, angels, etc. I have been wanting to read one of Terry Spear's books. Thank you so much for the chance.

  25. I'm like you, June, in that I like a variety! :) Thanks so much for wanting to read my story!

  26. How about more non-warmblooded shifters? Maybe giant insects? Wouldn't a 6-foot dragonfly be awesome?

(after that huge weta found in New Zealand, a 6-foot dragonfly doesn't sound so unbelievable after all)

    ReplyDelete
  27. Thank you for a wonderful post. My thoughts and prayers are for everyone in Hawaii remembering the terrible events that happened on this day.

I love shifters of any kind. Not picky, just want a good story that I can lose myself in. I haven't read this author but I've heard such positive buzz. Thanks and Happy Holidays!

  28. Are Angels paranormal or supernatural? Supernatural I think, but I'll stick with them. Nothing beats a Fallen Angel in my book, or anyone's book for that matter.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I don't like the sparkly ones ;-) and as of lately I'm really drawn to books that feature werewolves, which is a bit weird seeing how their eating habits don't really match my own (I'm a vegetarian) ;-) ! On the upside, they are very loyal creatures and cuddly too.

    P.S.: International

  30. Sheree, now that's interesting. I love dragonflies! But I dunno. It's hard to envision a sexy guy being an insect some of the time!

Erin, I so agree, in remembering those who suffered through the tragic events that day.

Marybelle, some called them either. Not sure either!

Birgit, amen! My critique partner is also vegetarian, so it's made for some interesting comments since her hero eats meat also. :) But her heroine doesn't in one of her stories. :)

  31. i love cat shifters!! jaguars?? cant wait! yea i like all the big cat big cat shifters, pumas, lynx, lion, tigers.. especially ones with some psychic abilities.. or just psychics as well.. lol..

  33. My favorite paranormal creatures are good vampires. Love reading about them!

  34. I love reading Paranormal Romance so I'm a fan of all different kinds of paranormal beings and creatures. Favourites would have to be vampires and shifters!
