And I just finished a great book - Michelle Diener's IN A TREACHEROUS COURT:

Henry VIII’s most lethal courtier and his newly appointed artist become the only thing keeping him on the throne – and if they survive, neither will ever be the same.

John Parker is one of Henry VIII most useful courtiers — utterly merciless and completely loyal. But one small favour for his King will pull Parker into a deadly plot against the throne, one that will test his courage, his resolve, and most especially, his heart.

A commission from Henry VIII should have been the crowning achievement of Susanna Horenbout’s career, but before the beautiful and talented artist even sets foot in England, she finds herself in possession of a secret that could change its history. With Parker as her only protection against killers who will stop at nothing to silence her, Susanna has to trust the dangerous, enigmatic courtier. She’s used to fighting in a man’s world, but she never expected to be fighting for her life.

August Reading Challenge - Bring Me Heroes:   IN THE TREACHEROUS COURT featured an unexpected hero - John Parker.   As the king's trusted agent, he didn't expect to repeatedly defend, let alone fall in love with, Susanna.  He is a true "knight in shining armor".

August Reading Challenge - Bring Me Heroes! Plus an interview with Tamara in Afghanistan

Coast Guard Heroes

Early in the summer, my friend Anna suggested I add a Reading Challenge to my blog.   After some thought on how to make this unique (like me), here's the plan:

1.  On the first day of the the month, I will announce the "theme" for you to consider as you read any books.

In August, it is "Bring Me Heroes" in honor of the month's notable celebrations:  US Coast Guard's birthday, William Wallace's Legacy and Duke Kahanamoku's birthday.

We are starting early because I already have a guest scheduled for August 1.

Sports heroes - Duke Kahanamoku and Babe Ruth

2.  On the last day of the month, I will solicit your comments about the theme - for August, what heroes (or heroines) inspired you in the books you read throughout the month?

3.  Each Saturday will spotlight the theme - for August, I am spotlighting real heroes who inspired me.

Tamara and her "joint" team

Today I spotlight a heroine who inspires me - Tamara in Afghanistan!  She is a Navy doctor and romance reader.   Tamara joins us for an intimate interview:

Kim:  What has been the biggest challenge and reward during your deployment?

Tamara:  There have been several challenges in this deployment but the biggest one is trying to provide US standard health care with supply shortages constantly. We have run out of gloves, gauze, tape, crutches, syringes, sterile gowns, etc at one time or another.

One of the biggest rewards is our blossoming mentorship program with the Afghan National Army health care team. When we arrived, they didn't participate in any training with us. Now we have 6-8 of them show up every morning eager to learn and help us care for their comrades in arms as well as their countrymen. We provide didactic as well as hands on skill training in multiple areas and nothing is more satisfying then helping them.

Kim:  What have you learned about the Afghan people?

Tamara:  The Afghans are a very proud and stoic people. They have a great sense of humor, but it takes a lot to get a smile out of them. They have an intense sense of community, every patient has at least on person with them at all times helping them. When there are multiple patients on the ward from all over the country, it doesn't matter, they become their own village and defer to the eldest member. They look out for and care for one another even if they are strangers.

Kim:  How can readers support deployed personnel?

Tamara:  As a medical team we are a fixed structure and don't go on missions. The people who go on missions like to have travel size hygiene products to take with them.  When we receive those supplies we save for patients and take to the MWR tent for other soldiers to pick up.

It is very hot in the summer and we drink a lot of bottled water. Everyone likes flavoring for this and if it can replenish salt, that is even better. Snacks like beef jerky, nuts, non-chocolate candy (melts), trail mix, meals that you can make in a microwave or adding hot water to are very appreciated. Ziploc bags in all sizes, air freshener, extra socks (for boots or tennis shoes), and sunblock.

Specifically for our patients: large diapers (we have pediatric patients, but no supply chain for them), toys, clean used kids clothes, adult and child flip-flops.

Mahalo, Tamara, for giving us a glimpse of deployed life.   I salute you and your team for serving the US personnel and Afghan people!

Today's giveaway is for Tamara - a box of the items listed above.  If you are interested in sending a box to Tamara, please contact me at sos.aloha@yahoo.com for her mailing address.

Meanwhile, I welcome comments from you - do you know someone currently deployed?  Do you have (or have you had) a deployed "pen pal"?    What would you miss from home if you deployed?

Kim in Hawaii

Aloha to Nancy Gideon and BOUND BY MOONLIGHT

Several months ago, the romance community hosted Operation Auction.  I won breakfast with Nancy Gideon during the RWA National Convention.  Our breakfast turned into an intimate chat, during which I extended an invitation to appear here at SOS Aloha  ... and viola, Nancy Gideon is here with us today!

With over 50 sales to her credit since her first publication in 1987, PortageMichigan author Nancy Gideon’s writing career is as versatile as the romance market, itself.  Her books encompass genres from historicals and regencies to contemporary suspense and the paranormal. Her works have been published overseas in Romanian, Italian, Russian, Portuguese, Danish, German, Icelandic and Chinese, among other languages.

Also listed on the International Movie Database (IMDB), she collaborated on the Indie horror films In the Woods and Savage with screenwriting and ADR script credits, and even played the character “Bar Extra.”

Kim:  Your bibliography speaks for itself - you are a versatile author!  What feedback do you receive from your US fans?  International fans?

Nancy:  Most of my foreign copies were sold back in the days before Internet so, unfortunately, there was never any good way for authors and readers to connect. Now that everyone’s on line, I’ll find myself chatting with a fan and it’s a huge surprise to discover they live in Europe, Asia, or South America. Technology has made this a much smaller planet.  I have a lot a foreign friends on my Face Book page from all around the globe who’ll be posting away in their own language then send me a message in English.  I love to see the pictures they download from their various cultures. I don’t think International fans are any different than U.S. fans—they’re united by the love of a good story. And if they love you, they REALLY love you.

Kim:  I am curious about your contributions to the movie industry.  How did that happen?   What was more fun - writing the script or playing a character?

Nancy:  I got a surprise call from the owner of a local bookstore who said he’d been approached by an area filmmaker who had just returned to Michigan from Florida and was looking for someone to write a novelization from his horror screenplay.  The bookseller, bless his heart, pulled out one of my Midnight vampire series books and said, “Read this.”  I’m a huge movie buff and was thrilled to work with Katharsys Pictures.  I not only wrote the film novelization, I got to add to the script and visit behind the scenes during shooting with my son, who had filmmaking aspirations. I put together the ADR script (the script that the actors use when they do voice overs) and got a film credit for that, too. What fun!

My debut role consisted of sitting in a local pub as a background ‘bar extra,’ pretending not to look at the camera.  You can ALMOST recognize me. I was so nervous you would have thought I had a major role.  But it was a blast and it got me two mentions on IMDB, one as Actor and one as Screenwriter, which impresses the heck out of my sons’ friends (a lot more than me being a romance writer does!). I collaborated on a screenplay for a sequel which sold to another Indie company and from that, got my first film industry paycheck.  It was a great experience because I basically write my novels like a screenplay and visualize it playing out as a movie.

Kim:  Tell us about your "Moonlight" series - what inspired it?   And your newest release, BOUND BY MOONLIGHT?

Nancy:  After doing the Midnight vampire romance series, I’d always wanted to get back into writing paranormal. When my then editor asked if I had any ideas for one, I was burned out on vampires so  I pulled out an old werewolf proposal that I’d done about ten years ago and polished it up.  She liked the writing and loved the Prologue, but could I give her an entirely different plot and all new characters? I came up with the scene that follows the prologue, of a tough female cop and her partner chasing leads to a mobster’s spooky home where they encounter his much spookier right hand man. That’s when I met Max and it was literary love at first scene. The story just poured out, through one book, into two, then three, becoming a much bigger project than my editor could handle. It sold to Pocket after some pretty fast talking considering the three books featured the same hero and heroine—not unusual in urban fantasy but practically unheard of in paranormal romance.

When it came time for my next contract, I’d already written BOUND BY MOONLIGHT, planning to continue in the By Moonlight world with Max and Cee Cee indefinitely. But my publisher wanted to branch out in the series with new heroes and heroines, so I did some major rewriting to use BOUND BY MOONLIGHT to tie up Max and Cee Cee’s romance arc.  They continue in the next two books as strong secondary characters.

Kim:  What's next for Nancy Gideon?

Nancy:  HUNTER OF SHADOWS, the next book in the series, comes out 11-29-11.  It features a dedicated Shifter cop who has a hidden agenda and a fearless assassin who is determined to get in his way both professionally and intimately.  I just loved writing about them, and the way they expand the By Moonlight mythology.  I’m just finishing the revisions to Book 6 which will be out in July, 2012 and features hunky Shifter club owner Jacques LaRoche and the woman who stole his heart . . . and his memories.  I’m also actively working to make my sizable out of-print back list of books available again along with some new editions to finish up several historical series that never got closure.  And I’m doing a non-fiction writing-related project.  I’ll hopefully be busy for a very long time.

Readers can follow what I’m up to on my
website: http://nancygideon.com/
and blog: http://nancygideon.blogspot.com.

Thanks for inviting me to the Islands, Kim!

Aloha to Stefanie Sloane, the Regency Rogues, and THE SINNER WHO SEDUCED ME

Today we visit the Northwest to meet Regency author Stefanie Sloane to celebrate the release of her third book in the Regency Rogues series, THE SINNER WHO SEDUCED ME.  From her bio

A native Northwesterner with the pale skin to prove it, Stefanie credits her parents' eclectic reading habits--not to mention their decision to live in the middle of nowhere--for her love of books. A childhood spent lost in the pages of countless novels led Stefanie to college where she majored in English. No one was more surprised than Stefanie when she actually put her degree to use and landed a job in Amazon.com's Books editorial department. She spent over five years reading for a living before retiring to concentrate on her own stories. Stefanie currently resides with her family in Seattle.

Kim:  What is your favorite sight, sound, and smell in Frasier's home town.

Stefanie:  Sight would have to be the Puget Sound. I grew up across the street from the beach, and live within walking distance of the sound now. So many of my fondest memories are tied to the water—it’s very much like an old friend at this point. I don’t know that I could ever live anywhere else.

Sound. Hmmm, well, though many find them annoying, I love the barking of the seals late at night. I can hear them while I’m drifting off to sleep and it’s quite comforting in a way.

As for smell—yikes, I seem to be all about the water! I’m going with the marine air that greets me every morning. A bit tangy from the salt, a bit sweet from the rain, and, well, a bit fishy, though in the best way possible.

Puget Sound

In high school, Stefanie was sure that she would end up in sunny California, living somewhere near the beach and working as a museum curator. She still loves art and adores a visit now and again replete with palm trees, but the soggy Seattle climate and interesting life of an author suit her to a T.

Kim:  Imagine your "dream" museum has an opening for an associate curator.  What museum would that be?   Have you incorporated art into your books?

Stefanie:  Oh, it would have to be the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. I was just there to see the Alexander McQueen exhibit, which was breathtaking. Every time I enter the Met, I’m filled with awe and wonder. It would be amazing to feel that every single day, wouldn’t it?

As for art and literature in my books, the heroine of my third book The Sinner Who Seduced Me is a painter—and quite a good one at that. I could never quite wrangle the oil to resemble anything remotely artistic, so I created a character who could!

Alexander McQueen Exhibit at the Met

Oddly enough, she’s related to William Wallace on one side, and a prominent figure in the Lutheran church on the other.

Kim:  A perfect genealogy for historical romance.   What inspired the Young Corinthians in the Regency Rogues series?   Did any of your family's history contribute to your research?

Stefanie:  Well, I love spies. Think about it: James Bond in breeches. Yum. And that’s exactly what the Young Corinthians are—delicious, dangerous, mysterious, manly men. I also love a good mystery. Put the two together and you’ve got plenty to be inspired by, wouldn’t you agree?

Two Strings to Her Bow by John Pettie

Kim:  What's next for Stefanie Sloane?

Stefanie:  I’ve just finished book four in the Regency Rogues series, entitled The Saint Who Stole My Heart and am currently thinking about book five as well as a super secret  project! Stay tuned!

Mahalo, Stefanie, for joining us at SOS Aloha!  In honor of your visit, I am giving away a copy of THE SINNER WHO SEDUCED ME to one randomly selected commenter:

A dedicated Young Corinthian agent, James Marlowe accepts the riskiest of missions—to go undercover as a traitor and infiltrate a deadly French crime organization. He is prepared for all matters of intrigue—everything but a surprise encounter with the only woman he has ever loved. Five years ago, the exquisitely stunning Clarissa Collins spurned James’s love and broke his heart. Now the accomplished painter is in peril up to her lovely neck, and only he can protect her.

Lady Clarissa is being blackmailed by malicious men—but that is nothing compared to the torture of being so close to James, the enthralling man who seduced Clarissa, then betrayed her. Despite the hurt and misunderstanding that still simmer between them, their passion ignites anew. With their lives and England’s safety hanging in the balance, they must work together to save everything they hold dear. Can Clarissa and James escape the enemy’s clutches and find their way back to each other’s hearts
. . . this time forever?

To enter the giveaway,

1.  Leave a comment about "delicious, dangerous, mysterious, manly men" - do you prefer them in breeches?   kilt?  uniform? spurs?

2.  This giveaway is open to all readers.

3.  Comments are open through Saturday, July 30, 10 pm in Hawaii.   I'll post the winner on Sunday, July 31.

Macmillan Audio Book Giveaway - SUMMER RENTAL by Mary Kay Andrews and narrated by Isabel Keating

Summer is all about discovery ... and the Discovery Channel offers Cash Cab:

Unassuming people enter the "Cash Cab" as simple passengers taking a normal taxi ride, only to be shocked when they discover that they’re instant contestants on Discovery Channel's innovative game show!

Here at SOS Aloha, we have Audiobook Cab - ready to play?

Mary Kay (left) and Isabel (right)

Destination: SUMMER RENTAL - an audio book by Mary Kay Andrews and narrated by Isabel Keating:

With warm weather on the horizon comes the perfect audiobook to accompany those long car rides to the beach: Summer Rental (On Sale June 7, $39.99). Written by women’s fiction favorite and New York Times bestselling author Mary Kay Andrews, Summer Rental follows five people over the course of one summer as they go on a journey that will uncover their secrets and point them on the path to forgiveness.

St. Petersburg
destination360.com

Starting Point: St. Petersburg, Florida

Mary Kay Andrews is "a native of St. Petersburg, Florida (and a diplomate of the Maas Bros. Department Store School of Charm).

Question: St. Petersburg is called the "the city of arts" because it is home to several museums, including the largest collection of this Spanish surrealist outside of Europe - name the artist.

(tick, tock, tick, tock)

Answer: Salvador Dali. It is a must see museum ...

...  but it can wait 'til the winter when the Florida temperature and humidity is bearable. So let's travel north to Georgia.

Mary Kay Andrews "earned a B.A. in journalism from the University of Georgia in 1976 (Go Dawgs!). She started her professional journalism career in Savannah, Georgia, where she covered the real-life murder trials which were the basis of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. She left journalism after a ten-year stint as a reporter for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.."

Downtown Atlanta

Question: Hot 'Lanta! It is home of the NFL's Falcons, CNN headquarters, and what soft drink giant?

(tick tock, tick tock)

Answer: Coca-Cola. Despite its refreshing taste, it's still too hot in landlocked Atlanta  ...

thecoca-colacompany.com

... so let's drive northeast towards the South Carolina coast.

Mary Kay "as a lifelong 'junke' the author claims to know the location of every promising thrift store, flea market and junkpile in the southeastern United States, plus many parts of Ohio."

South Carolina
resortvacations.com

Question: No doubt South Carolina's antique shops feature collectibles from the Civil War since it is the birthplace of the War between the States. What sparked the Civil War?

(tick tock, tick tock)

Answer: Confederate forces attacked the Union troops quartered Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861.

South Carolina is a good candidate for a summer rental. But South Carolina is also home to several military bases with personnel returning home from overseas deployments. Let's leave the beaches for their R&R and travel north to North Carolina's Outer Banks - home of Roanoke Colony, Kitty Hawk, Cape Hatteras, and SUMMER RENTAL:

Ellis, Julia, and Dorie, best friends since Catholic grade school, now find themselves, in their mid-thirties, at the crossroads of life and love. Recently fired Ellis is rudderless and now beginning to question the choices she's made over the past decade of her life. Wry Julia has a man who loves her and is offering her the world, but can't hide from how deeply insecure she feels about her looks, her brains, her life. And trusting Dorie has just been shockingly betrayed by the man she loved and trusted the most in the world…though this is just the tip of the iceberg of her problems and secrets. A month in North Carolina's Outer Banks is just what they each of them needs. Ty Bazemore is their landlord, though he's hanging on to the rambling old beach house by a thin thread. After an inauspicious first meeting with Ellis, the two find themselves disturbingly attracted to one another, even as Ty is about to lose everything he's ever cared about. Maryn Shackleford is a stranger, and a woman on the run. Maryn needs just a few things in life: no questions, a good hiding place, and a new identity. Ellis, Julia, and Dorie can provide what Maryn wants; can they also provide what she needs?

The audio book of SUMMER RENTAL has extra features:

Isabel Keating returns to narrate her sixth Mary Kay Andrews audiobook, and the program includes a bonus conversation between the author and narrator where the two discuss everything from Andrews’ passion for old homes to the southern background they both share. Keating, a big Andrews fan, praises the immersive quality of Summer Rental saying “I still am vibrating with the scenario that you created there in Nags Head, it’s just as if I were there,” while Andrews divulges the impetus behind her writing: “I want to give my readers joy” she explains in the interview. “If I can give my readers a big juicy peach of a book, then that makes me happy and it makes them happy, and when they’re happy then it’s all good and it gives me more motive to keep writing.” This is one that will appeal to both long-time Andrews fans and those newer to her work.
