Aloha to Jenn LeBlanc and THE WICKED BLOG TOUR

Hi everyone! Welcome to the next stop in the WICKED Blog tour! *smooch*

Last week I told my readers on Facebook that I was trying to write a bunch of blogs for the tour and I needed to know what they wanted to  learn. I got some GREAT questions, so I decided to do a little interview style post with readers. I answered some of the questions over on the Book Savvy Babe blog yesterday, and one reader had so many good questions, she is getting a post all to herself.

So without further ado, my interview with Pamela!

Pamela: Which comes first, the writing or photography? Do you envision the images in your head (what the characters are doing, wearing, etc.) THEN write the scene to match or vice versa?

With my first book, THE RAKE AND THE RECLUSE, the writing was first. I had NO IDEA it was giong to end up an illustrated romance, so I never thought about images as I was writing. However, there were times that I could see the scenes so vividly that when I did come to the decision to illustrate I knew exactly what scenes were the most important to me.

My next book, BETWEEN A FRIEND AND FOREVER is different because I know I will illustrate it. So while I am writing I have that in mind, but at the same time the characters and the story are really driving the writing. I don’t have much control over what happens, I DO have control over their costumes though and I have changed a few things as I’ve written in order to handle costuming. I figure that isn’t too much of a compromise, right?

Pamela: Which photographers have inspired you?
If you could photo illustrate another author's book, which would it be?

There are actually a few. Delilah Marvelle, because she would be a challenge, her heroes and heroines are so smart and wicked, it makes me crazy I love them so much. Pamela Clare because her heroes are just so damnably honorable and swoonworthy, Julie Anne Long because her stories are so rich and passionate. I have actually illustrated a novella for another author. It wasn’t commissioned or anything, but I loved the story SO MUCH that I just had to shoot it, just like fanfic, photography style. That was for Tiffany Reisz, her stories about Daniel. I just love that librarian dom hottie so much it makes me nuts. Would you like to see one?

Here ya go:

Anywhoo...I recently started doing cover art for romance novels which is SO MUCH FUN, it isn’t the full on illustrated story but it still speaks to my heart and I love it, and love to see what these aazing designers can do with my images.

Pamela:  If you could only have ONE profession, of your choosing, would you choose writing or photography?

I could never give up photography, I was born a photographer, it isn’t merely what I do, it’s who I am and since I can also tell stories with my camera if I had to choose, photography would be it. There really isn’t a choice, though I would be sad because writing is so amazing.

Pamela: Has Guy's back tattoo been completed?
If so...if I stand on one leg and cluck like a chicken, would you take a pic of it and post it for me?

First let me say this; you need to come join my Facebook page because we are just a crazy bunch of girls. To answer the question...LMAO! PAMELA! No it isn’t yet finished, but the moment it is I will shoot the heck out of it and post it up JUST FOR YOU. “Cause that’s the kinda girl I am. *mauh*

No idea what we’re talking about? Let me SHOW you. But first, last summer I met Guy, he is this GORGEOUS man, and just the absolute sweetest bone geek I’ve ever met. And when I say bone geek I mean PALEONTOLOGIST. Yup. Actual BONE geek. Anywhoo, I hadn’t seen him for a couple months and brought him in for a shoot and as I removed his shirt this AMAZING back piece came into view right before my eyes:

Talk about a holy *swoon* moment! So there it is. But, I have a better picture of Guy for you:

This was my favoritie from that shoot.

THANK YOU EVERYONE!! And thank you SO MUCH Pamela for such fabulous questions!! I had a great time.

A woman out of time.
A man stifled by propriety.
A nemesis determined to take her away.
A brother to the rescue.

How will a powerful Duke deal with a woman who doesn't know her place? How will a woman used to the 21st century survive in time where she is considered property?

Francine Larrabee woke up on the wrong side of the century. She was fairly certain she went to sleep in her own comfy bed, but she doesn’t quite seem to be there now. Only adding to her problems is that she has no voice, is constantly being glowered at by a large, stunning man who is obsessed with propriety, and she is apparently betrothed to another horrid little man, determined to ruin her, and any other girls that get in his way.
How does she find herself in the past, when she couldn’t even find herself in her present? How does a self sufficient businesswoman survive in a time when women were still considered property for the whole of their lives and what is she going to do with this man who draws her to him so fiercely.

  1. Do you feel photography can be taught or is it an art? A talent you have? I personally think it is a talent, but maybe you can develop it by taking classes

    1. Debby, I think that most art forms begin with inherent talents, and blossom from there. I know that photography also takes a lot of skill and training because it's a very technical medium. And I think to some extent it can be taught. But the best photographers are born with the sight, the have an eye for seeing in images, and may not even know it.

    2. Sorry! My phone is acting wonky. Anyway, I k ow when I started going to school for photography I was completely lost in the jargon of the critiques because I'd never learned all the technical work before, but I knew light and composition without being trained. I believe the most difficult thing a person might face if they want to be a photographer but don't necessarily have the talent is that ability to see light, how it falls, where it is, and what it will look like on film.

It sounds funny, I'm sure, but that is one thing that would be very difficult to learn and I know there are many working photographers who can't use the light they're given, but they're still successful. I know I rambled a bit

    3. And my phone acting funny didn't help! *sigh* bit hopefully I answered your question! :) thank you!

  2. Those pictures are *gasp* sooo nice. I love taking pictures and have several cameras. A 35mm camera that takes good pictures but I am so spoiled with the digi cam I only use it when I want actual pictures on paper. And I have a Kodak mini...I've noticed that like my Kodak mini...a lot of digi cameras and cameras on phones don't come with a built in flash and when I have tried using flash lights and other light sources to make the area brighter all I get is spots of bright lights or glare in my pictures. What's the best way to light up a space indoors when you don't have a flash on your camera?

    1. Thank you Mitzi! Indoor lighting is incredibly difficult, and it depends on what you are trying to light. There are a bunch of different work lights you could use for lighting but you have to soften the light because it's pretty harsh. If you want to shoot a family gathering the best thing to do is have it during the day and open all the windows while keeping all the lights on inside.

Lights that bounce off the ceiling (always paint your ceilings white) are a nice way to illuminate your space.

The other problem with indoor lighting is the color. I'm very sensitive to color because I'm a photographer, I can see the color of light before others can. Digital cameras are fabulous because they compensate for lighting shifts without you even knowing it's happening, just like our eyeballs. Indoor lighting has several colors ranging from orange to pink to green depending on the type of lightbulb, where I am going with this is the following: If you have different types of lights in your house your pictures will look funny because a camera can only compensate for one light.

I keep my house with full spectrum bulbs, but have one antique lamp that they don't make bulbs for, which means if I shoot in my living room it casts a very yellow light across the scene. These are the things you have to be aware of when inside, and why your pictures might look strange even though to the naked eye they look perfectly normal.

See what happens when you ask me photo questions?!?! I just can't shut up. ;)

  3. Jenn,

Do you know how to perform CPR? Those pictures are gorgeous, hot, and possibly lethal.

I am curious how it works for the "nude" photos. Do the models wear robes then get into place?

    1. Some models, actually most models, don't care who is looking, they like to be seen so it doesn't matter to them. That's their job. Though we try to keep it a bit respectable, accidents do happen and people get flashed. People usually being me because I am looking through my camera right at them. Hazard of the occupation I suppose.

  5. Jenn, I love you so much!!!! Hahahahaha! I didn't think you'd answer that last question but I love you even more for doing so! And I CAN'T WAIT for a Guy picture, that last one you posted is most definitely one of my faves as well! And a paleontologist?! *Swoon!* *Drool!* *Thud!*

I would hate to lose you as a writer, but as a photographer, even more so because your pictures do tell amazing stories on their own. They're full of so many details and nuances. I love looking at them and discovering new things in them every time, i.e. Derek's fingers unlacing the back of the dress.

Also...*googles Tiffany Reisz and and librarian dom hotties*... :P

I create a lot of graphics for fanfic/fan sites and people who request them for their own blogs, forums, etc. and I LOVE it. Maybe one day I'll actually get paid for it, LOL. Hubby is an amateur photographer and I think he's fantastic at it. I keep telling him to delve into it more so that I can start using his images in my graphics.

Thank you for answering ALL of my questions and letting me submit so many, I'm feeling super special right now! <3

    1. From another author? Oh goodness, that is a hard choice. I think with unlimited budget and anything possible I would want to shoot Meljean Brook's THE IRON DUKE because how COOL is steampunk? And that Rhys Traheaern is hardcore swoon worthy.

      Thank you! Jenn

  11. What a Saturday Surprise! What models are easier to work with - women or men? Have you tried on a corset, or gone naked, to understand how your models might feel?

    Panting,

    Pamela

    1. OMG!! NObody needs to see me in a corset or nekked, that's for sure. But my models are all very vocal so I know how they are feeling and if they are ever uncomfortable with something they speak up. Trust me. I work with some truly wonderful people, and to be perfectly honest everyone I have worked with so far has been wonderful.

No, I worked with one guy who was cranky, we worked together once. That's how that goes. In this kind of situation it is a REQUIREMENT that everyone have a good sense of humor and a great attitude.

  12. I'd like to ask a few questions about your writing. Panser or plotter? Critique partner or beta reader? How much time to you devote to your writing in comparison to your photography?

    This was fun!

    1. Hi Tina! I am a total pantser. I can't plot for the life of me, and I have tried. I have worked with some critique partners but it hasn't really panned out yet, and I LOVE LOVE LOVE my beta readers. I probably devote as much time to photography as I do writing, and now that I have brought them together I'm often working on both at the same time, which is really nice.
Thank you stopping by! And thank you for the great questions!
