Aloha to Chrissie Wellington and A LIFE WITHOUT LIMITS

Having witnessed some of the Ironman warmups on the Big Island of Hawaii, I requested to review Chrissie Wellington's A LIFE WITHOUT LIMITS:

In 2007, Chrissie Wellington shocked the triathlon world by winning the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii. As a newcomer to the sport and a complete unknown to the press, Chrissie's win shook up the sport. A LIFE WITHOUT LIMITS is the story of her rise to the top, a journey that has taken her around the world, from a childhood in England, to the mountains of Nepal, to the oceans of New Zealand, and the trails of Argentina, and first across the finish line.

Wellington's first-hand, inspiring story includes all the incredible challenges she has faced--from anorexia to near--drowning to training with a controversial coach. But to Wellington, the drama of the sports also presents an opportunity to use sports to improve people's lives.

A LIFE WITHOUT LIMITS reveals the heart behind Wellington's success, along with the diet, training and motivational techniques that keep her going through one of the world's most grueling events.

We met a Japanese competitor for Ironman
on the airport shuttle bus.  Notice his bike case!

I am currently reading A LIFE WITHOUT LIMITS and loving it!  It is inspiring ... I doubt I could run a marathon, let alone a triathlon, but I feel compelled to do a little more.    Has any sports star inspired you?  One randomly selected commenter wins Hawaii gift pack.  This giveaway is open to all readers.  Comments are open through Saturday, May 26, 10 pm in Hawaii.  I'll post the winner on Sunday, May 27.

Mahalo,

Kim in Hawaii

Competitors swim in the Pacific Ocean near Kona-Kailua.

  1. I'm always in awe about people like Chrissie. I know I could never do that, I'm just not cut out for anything that involves sport (well, I do walk a lot, does that count?) so I admire everyone who climbs the highest mountains or runs the longest marathons.

  2. There are definitely a few athletes that I admire including Derek Jeter.

  3. I don't find that it is sports stars that inspire me. I'm more inclined to be inspired by those who achieve in the areas of science or medicine.

  4. That is pretty amazing what people like Chrissie can do. The most I have done is walk a half marathon. Whew!! That was enough for me. But I did learn that the human body can do amazing things when pushed to do so.

As for a sports star that inspires me...I would put my sister in law in that category. She is 40 years old and is headed to her second Olympics in London this year. She is the goalie for the New Zealand Ferns women's soccer team. Jenny has overcome many obstacles in her life such as Crohn's Disease. That just shows me there is always more I can do.

  9. Wow this sounds like an amazing book, motivating. I will have to check it out! Glad you are checking it out so I could hear about it.
Whenever I watch a sports themed movie, like The Warrior, it makes me want to go work out and get good at something like that. =)

  11. I do admire many of them but I'm afraid I'm more of a couch potato or I should say a computer potato lol. Bowling and Boccie are about as strenuous as I get lol.

  12. Tennis superstar Rafael Nadal. He's right handed but uses his left hand while playing tennis. Amazing! :D

  13. I'm inspired by Bethany Hamilton, the teenage surfer who lost her arm surfing in Hawaii and got back on the board to compete despite the loss of one arm. I think her story is very inspirational and reminds us that even having huge setbacks does not mean we can't fulfill our dreams.

  14. I have been inspired by Lance Armstrong and his recovery from cancer and the Livestrong organization. There have also been paralympians (with physical disabilities) that I am in awe of. NOW, I wish it would be enough motivation to get me off my fanny and MOVE! LOL.

  15. I'm amazed at the dedication of most athletes.. most average people watching sporting events have no idea of what all goes into the training, planning, etc. I worked with college athletes for several years... it was amazing what they accomplished in 4-5 years.

  17. I agree with Catherine from above about being inspired by Lance Armstrong and his Livestrong organization. I'm really not a sports fan at all so I don't know many others.
