Aloha to Pamela Clare and DEFIANT

My regular readers know I love history!  Yesterday offered a tantalizing bit of trivia:

On July 4, 1754, Colonel George Washington (Virginia Militia)  surrendered Fort Necessity to the French Army during the French and Indian War.   Twenty one years later, he assumed command of the Continental Army to defend the Declaration of Independence.

I must have been daydreaming in high school history when the teacher covered the French and Indian War, aka the Seven Years War.   I knew little about it until investigative journalist - turned - innovative author Pamela Clare launched the MacKinnon's Ranger Series.   She almost had fans wait seven years* for her to complete the series with this week's release of DEFIANT:

Major Connor MacKinnon despises his commander, Lord William Wentworth, beyond all other men. Ordered to rescue Wentworth's niece after the Shawnee take her captive, he expects Lady Sarah Woodville to be every bit as contemptible as her uncle. Instead, he finds a brave and beautiful lass in desperate peril. But the only way to free Sarah is for Connor to defeat the Shawnee warrior who kidnapped her—and claim her himself.

Torn by tragedy from her sheltered life in London, Lady Sarah is unprepared for the harshness of the frontier-or for the attraction she feels toward Connor. When they reach civilization, however, it is she who must protect him. For if her uncle knew all that Connor had done to save her, he would surely kill him.

But the flames of passion, once kindled, are difficult to deny. As desire transforms into love, Connor will have to defy an empire to keep Sarah at his side.

* Okay, it was almost four years but it felt like seven.

  2. I love history there is so much to learn either by reading or watching the History Channel.

I love to read about the old west.

I heard this book is excellent read and I can't wait to read it.

  3. I like history in books and flms very much! I think it's one of the reasons I fell in love with Pamela'a series. It's so full of history that I never knew much about. A film with a great historical part that comes to my mind is the Last of the Mohicans. And it isn't a hardship to look at Daniel Day-Lewis either. ;)

  4. I love history in books and movies. It makes the time come alive.

  5. I love history. I minored in American History in college. I especially love the war periods--Civil War, and WW I and II. There was a time when all of my reading for pleasure consisted of non-fiction, historical books.

  6. I like a bit of real history in my books. My favorite is actually the French Revolution. The blood bath and violence still surprised me and I find the drama interesting...

  7. I enjoy history in my reading but not from history books - they are usually way too dry. I want to hear about the people, not dates and statistics. Any time period is interesting to me. I've not read her lately, but I remember enjoying Pamela's books.

  8. You had me counting on my fingers, Kim! RT Bookreviews said it had been a decade. What I take from this is that the wait felt verrrry long to readers. Sorry about that!

If I can just pipe up and answer a couple of questions I get almost every day about this...

"Why do you focus more on the I-Team stories than historicals. You let the historicals languish."

I love historicals. They're what I love most to read, and I love writing them too. The long wait is the result of the publisher that owned the rights going under. They slowly disappeared from the scene, and I had no choice but to leave them. That meant leaving the series because they owned the rights to it. My agent eventually got my rights back, and Penguin bought the series. This process took years.

In the meantime, I still had to eat, so I focused on I-Team books. I love romantic suspense, even though it had never been my idea to write it.

If things had gone well with the original publisher, I would have been alternating between historical and romantic suspense, not just writing romantic suspense.

"Are there going to be additional books in this series?"

    YES, absolutely. :-)

Kim, I love the quote you use to start your review. The words (and action) that launched a world war. Poor George was in a bit over his head out there at the age of 22, wasn't he? I feel such affection for him.

Thanks for this post and for the review!

Good luck in the drawing, everyone! And be sure to check out the live-action trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYQA2WhPz58

    Mahalo!

  9. I love they history books, not so much the movies. For books I really enjoy 1940s in America, just after WWII

  10. I don't really love history... as in studying a certain time period or whatever. My father-in-law was an airman in WWII so that is interesting to me. I never absorbed much from history class in school, so it's like I was learning about this time period from Pamela's wonderful historical series! (The historicals of Pamela Clare are one of only a very few I choose to read... LOVE them!) I would love to win a copy of this book!

  12. I don't necessarily look for history in my romance but don't mind it (as long as it doesn't overshadow the romance & is reasonably realistic/accurate -- or clearly indicated "alternate history").

  13. I am not a history buff. I am an avid reader though. Historical Romance is my favorite, but I read all sorts of books including SciFi, Paranormal, Bios, Religious, War Stories, etc. I have loved Pamela Clare's MacKinnon Ranger books and would LOVE to have a signed copy of Defiant.

  14. I like history but i don't puposely go in search of learning about it. I pick up what i can where i find it. I do love historicals but i don't really think about it in terms of what time in history it's about. It's for me all about the story.

I have only read book one in this series but i have book 2 on my TBR shelf i guess i need to hurry and catch up!

Love the trailer and all the pics that went along with making it.

  15. I love history and I like both - reading books and seeing movies/documentaries. And I like all sorts of time periods, especially Colonial America, the Wild West, and 1920's America.

  16. I do like reading about historical facts in historical romance books, just so long as it doesn't dwell on it too much and take it away from the story. My favorite time periods are in no particular order, Medieval, Tudor, Regency and Georgian eras.

Thank you for this chance to win Pamela's books. I'd love to read "Defiant".

  17. I love it when authors include a bit of history in their books especially if I don't know whatever tidbit of information they include. It doesn't matter the time period, but the more interesting the information the better.

  18. I like to watch movies set in the 1800s.

  19. Text book history has always been a struggle for me, but I've always enjoyed watching history movies/documentaries/biographies. I'm partial to American History but love watching shows about any era. I find learning more about history makes me more aware/thankful of what I have in my life and what was sacrificed for me to have it.

  20. I have to be honest and admit that I have never been a fan of history. Perhaps because I was such a poor student (it was dry and presented in a boring manner and I couldn't remember dates) and I just never developed an interest. It's only been in recent years that I have started to enjoy historical fiction (mysteries, thrillers, some romance). I am a big fan of Pamela's I-Team series though.

  29. I had little interest in history when I was in school so now I do enjoy reading stories with historical details in them because I can get an idea of what life was like in that time. I like all different places and time periods.

  30. I've always adored history, particularly the colonial & revolutionary period covered in this book - I would love to read it.

  31. I love reading historicals. Fiction tends to make history more exciting but it was my favorite subject at school too, so non fiction works for me too!

  35. I like some history in both books and movies, but I don't want to be inundated with it. To me, I am reading/watching fantasy, not a documentary. If the author makes it appealing, I will read any historical period. I really enjoy Highland history though.
Congrats to Pamela on her new release! :)
