Winners - please claim your prize by sending your mailing address to sos.aloha@yahoo.com.   And I am the winner with a new laptop, helping me to catch up with my other blogs:

- ALOHA ON MY MIND, my travel blog at this link.

- CELEBRATE LITTLE VICTORIES, my "get through the day" blog at this link.

Stop the presses!  My family is watching a special video as I write this blog.  My husband sings with the barbershop chorus, SOUNDS OF ALOHA.   The chorus recorded their spring show, DERAILED:  A Fixed Rail Time Machine.   They are poking fun at Honolulu's ongoing political debate on installing a light rail system.   If you know anything about barbershop, they combine four part harmony with goofy jokes.  At this point in the show, two Hawaiian teens on the time machine have crossed paths with the Star Trek crew in the future:

LEO: (looking closely at Sprock) Wow! You got cool ears! You kinda tall fo one menehune!

SPROCK: I’m a Vulcan.

LEO: Oh yeah? My cousin went UH Hilo too! You know Alvin Rosario, Class of 2094? (Sprock looks confused) Live long and prosper.

(Sprock does the Vulcan hand sign.  Leo tries to copy but can’t, so does the shaka instead.  Sprock shrugs.)

I did not realize that University of Hawaii - Hilo (on the Big Island of Hawaii) call themselves the Vulcans.   Their nickname comes from Vulcan, the Roman God of Fire (as the Big Island has an active volcano).  I suppose it might by sacrilegious to call themselves the Peles after Hawaii's volcano goddess.

This tidbit inspires today's question - what's the name of your local mascot - high school, college, or any organization?  One randomly selected commenter wins a book choice from my convention stash.  This giveaway is open to all readers.  Comments are open through Saturday, July 14, 10 pm in Hawaii.  I'll post the winner on Sunday, July 15.

Mahalo,

Kim in Hawaii

The high school that Hubs and our daughters graduated from - The Brynes Rebels. An appropriate mascot for a southern HS named after a prominent figure in history.

  10. Congrats everyone, and thanks!

The Vulcans, what a great mascot name! Ha! My highschool was the Chargers, a bold of lightening. Not very intimidating, but at least the colors were red and silver so our uniforms weren't too horrible.

  11. Congrats, winners!

I went to Texas Tech in Lubbock, TX. We were the Red Raiders. Our mascot was a guy in a Zorro looking suit (red and black) and a mask riding a black horse.

I love the picture of Pele. I think I have that exact pic. on a postcard or something.

  25. Congrats to all of the winners. :)
That is neat that your husband is in a barbershop chorus. I would imagine it is fun for him.
In my city, there are more than 4 high schools. I think the funniest is the Sharks. I don't know why, it just amuses me. ;)
The Vulcans sound pretty cool though.
