On this date in in 1944, the US Navy's 3rd and 7th Fleets engaged the Imperial Japanese Navy during the Battle of Leyte Gulf. It was the largest naval battle of WWII and possibly the largest naval battle in history. From Wikipedia,
The Battle of Leyte Gulf is also notable as the first battle in which Japanese aircraft carried out organized kamikaze attacks. Also worth noting is the fact that Japan at this battle had fewer aircraft than the Allied Forces had sea vessels, a clear demonstration of the difference in power of the two sides at this point of the war.
The Imperial Japanese Navy sustained heavy damages and retreated home.

In Laura Griffins' new thriller, SCORCHED, she delivers a different kind of battle in the Philippines:
Kelsey Quinn set out to trace a murder victim. Now she may become one.
The dead don’t speak, but Kelsey knows their secrets. As a forensic anthropologist at the Delphi Center crime lab, Kelsey makes it her mission to identify bodies using no more than shards of bone, and her find at a remote Philippines dig hints at a sinister story. When Kelsey’s search for answers puts her at the scene of her exfiancĂ©’s murder, only one man can help her. The same man who broke her heart just months before, and who is also a prime suspect. Faced with an ultimatum— Kelsey or his job—Gage Brewer did the only thing a Navy SEAL could . . . but that doesn’t mean he stopped wanting Kelsey. Now Kelsey is running for her life and Gage is her last line of defense. As the threats escalate, Kelsey realizes this conspiracy goes deeper and higher than they could have guessed. With the clock ticking down on a madman’s plot, the slightest misstep will have unthinkable consequences. . . .

And you can find Kelsey's fellow forensic anthropologists here on Hickam AFB at the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command. When bones are found, they are airlifted to Hickam, received with honors, and identified if possible. Hawaii Five O featured the JPAC mission in MEA MAKAMEA (October 10, 2011) at this link and this link.

I find forensic science fascinating. It is like putting together a puzzle and you have to find the pieces.
ReplyDeleteI would have loved to have gone into that field, when I was younger that wasn't really a field that everyone talked about going into.
ReplyDeleteYes, she mentioned that she's been here in our country, yay! :D.. Anyway, I'm a huge fan of forensic science. The truth is, the first foreign t.v show that I've watched was CSI. Got really hooked with the show. Love how they solve those mind boggling cases. :D
ReplyDeleteYes, i do :)
ReplyDeleteForsenic, dna is all very interesting science, I find it amazing the depth that science is into now.
ReplyDeleteI find forensic science absolutely fascinating. It's such a shame that we didn't have this technology years and years ago. So many more crimes could have been solved, and maybe found somebody innocent of a crime that they had been accused of.
ReplyDeleteForensic science is really interesting. I read lots of novels that use this in solving crimes. I also watch TV shows that use it.
ReplyDeleteYes, I think it is very fascinating how they piece it all together.
ReplyDeleteI am impressed by the way forensic science combines technology and good detective work. It's very interesting. I'm looking forward to Scorched. Laura's Tracers series is great.
ReplyDeleteThanks for a great post and giveaway! I love CSI and all the procedural crime shows. It's fun to see forensic science at work even if it's exaggerated.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to read Gage and Kelsey's book. I am interested in forensic science. It's a fascinating subject.
ReplyDeleteI think it's wonderful what they can do now, especially with DNA. More bad guys getting caught!!
ReplyDeleteForensic science definitely interests me. I like watching crim shows where they go in depth about forensics and it's interesting what I learn.
ReplyDeleteI love learning about forensic science and how it helps to catch criminals. I have always loved watching crime shows where DNA and other microscopic evidence trips up the criminals and get them caught.
ReplyDeleteI think it's interesting but I can't watch any of those shows. They kind of scare me with the blood and murder and all that...
ReplyDeleteIt interests me that they can use it and figure out what happened because of it. But the actual details and sciency things behind it, really are not for me.
ReplyDeleteYes, it's interesting.
ReplyDeleteYes, it does! I love the crime scene shows and I adore Laura's books. Thanks for the chance.
