In the Navy with Cathy Maxwell and THE SCOTTISH WITCH

Cathy Maxwell needs no introduction.   From her bio (at this link),

You would never believe: That I’ve spent six years in the Navy. I worked in the Pentagon and did a tour with Naval Intelligence. I’ve also managed a watch factory, been a news broadcaster, and done costumes for local theater. Tinker, tailor, soldier, spy.

Cathy with Kieran Kramer, Navy spouse, at RT/Chicago in 2012.

That's the making of a thriller novel ... lucky for romance readers, Cathy Maxwell writes heartwarming historicals for Avon Romance.    If you attend the RT Booklovers' Convention, just listen for her laugh.  Also from her bio,

You will never see me: With my mouth closed.

Patricia Rice, Christina Skye, Cathy, and Sue Grimshaw at RT/11 in LA.

Her laugh is infectious.  Her panels are outrageous.   Her warmth is comforting.   Again from her bio,

What is the most important element to a romance novel: The characters. Strong characters can carry a weak plot, but weak characters can never carry a strong plot. The latter is like biting into a juicy apple and finding out it’s nothing but mush inside.

Eileen Dryer, Patricia Rice, and Cathy with elephant's nose.

Cathy creates memorable characters in her current series, THE CHATTAN CURSE.   A Scottish witch curses the Chattan family in the 17th century when the heir abandons her daughter.

When a Chattan male falls in love,
strike his heart with fire from Above

Generations later, the current heir, Lord Lyon, seeks a wife that he cannot love in Book One, LYON'S BRIDE - which I featured at this link.   LYON'S BRIDE reminds us that love is worth the risk.   And Lyon's love inspires his brother, Harry, to find another witch to break the curse in Book Two, THE SCOTTISH WITCH - available October 30.

Oh, Harry, I have been waiting for you!

Harry has his own crosses to bear before he can help his brother ... and himself:

“If love means death . . . is it worth the price?”

Portia Maclean believes she is beyond love and marriage. Then one moonlit night, while attempting a daring masquerade in a desperate bid to protect her family, she finds herself swept off her feet by a powerful stranger. But what will he do once he discovers she has betrayed him?

Harry Chattan is fighting for his family. For two hundred years the Chattan men have been destroyed by love . . . and now he’s come to Scotland on the hunt for a witch to break the curse. Instead he finds himself bewitched by Portia. Harry has vowed to fight the demons that torture him.

But will that battle destroy her as well?

Come back on Wednesday, October 31, for my review of THE SCOTTISH WITCH plus giveaway.  Today I am giving away a copy of LYON'S BRIDE plus Cathy's military themed anthology, FOR LOVE AN HONOR, with Lynne Hinton and Candis Terry.   To enter the giveaway,

  1. I believe we make our own fate. I love curses and spells in fiction, but I don't believe them to be real.

  2. I don't know if they are real or fake, but they do make a fantastic story. I think it depends on how y'all are raise and if y'all believe in curses and spells.

  3. I love stories where fate plays a role. Like a H/H meant to be together :D Some spells can be fun or make an interesting story. I don't really believe in them in reality, but would love to read about the curse Harry's family suffers under.

  4. I believe there is a lot of this world we cannot explain. So who knows? As to fate, we can alter our fate but maybe not change it completely.

  5. I love historical romance that included the "occult". Magic, spells, and fate spice up the stories! I'm not sure that i believe in "magic" but I do believe in fate.

  7. I used to believe in those things, but not so much these days. I've become quiet skeptical as I've gotten older and if I can't see it...I don't believe it.

  8. I believe that things happen for a reason. I believe in curses and fate. I also believe in Karma too.

I've already read Lyon's Bride, so there's no need to enter me into the contest.

  9. The cover reminds me of Christmas!
I do to some extent believe in curses, destiny and fate. I believe in karma and reaping what you sow. Whether I fully believe or not I figure it doesn't hurt to heed them.

  15. I definitely believe in fate - to a point. Everyone can make choices, but fate puts the choices before you. I can't for the Scottish Witch! I already have Lyon's Bride.

  16. I definitely believe in fate, but not spells and curses.

  17. I think if you believe in them then they are your reality. Mind over matter kind of thing.

  18. I think we are all 'restricted' by fate in some ways. But I don't think that we are struck forever by it.

  19. I don't really believe in fate, I think we make our own fate by the choices we make. I like witches, but I don't believe curses and spells do anything. It would be cool if they did.

  21. You asked about curses, spells and fate, Kim. I am a believer in many things seen and unseen. I'm not exactly sure about preoridination because we humans make a mess out of things on our own, but I also believe in the divine, the power of creation, and the good in life.

Happy to celebrate fleet week with you! And hugs to my WRW pal, Cathy. What a smokin' cover!

  23. I have always believed in Fate! Things are meant for us from the beginning. We can change outcomes by our decisions but the original occurrence is destined.

  24. I believe in things that go bump in the night, so why not spells and curses? Fate? I believe we can change fate based on our decisions - or lack thereof.

  25. Hi Kim!

I loved your interview with Kathy! Don't you just love her books? I didn't know that she had worked at the Pentagon.

When our sons were young my husband decided we'd take our sons to Washington for a history tour. We ended up driving down hauling our $50.00 tent trailer behind our 1964 Rambler and getting a space at a campgroun right next to a Holiday Inn! I always wondered what the people there thought of the tacky little campground next to them. All I know that back then it cost of $10.00/night to stay and their rooms cost a lot more than that!

My husband had a list of all the things he wanted our sons to see but first he wanted to take them to see the Pentagon. He had found out that there was a train stop there and felt he could kill two birds with one stone - see the Pentagon, take a train, see the sights and return. My husband parked the car in the parking lot and the boys really enjoyed seeing the parts of the Pentagon that we could see and then it was off to the train. It was a fun filled day walking Washington and we even took in the Zoo.

When we finally got back to the parking lot at the Pentagon and were approaching the car we saw security having cars towed away! Come to find out if we got back 10 minutes later our car would have been too! He had a sticker on the car because he was in the Navy Reserves but didn't notice this was actually "employee" parking! I have a feeling an extra cop of coffee or a lunch break that lasted too long is the only thing that kept us from being "stranded" at the Pentagon!

I guess you could say that Fate was on our side that day because both our sons are now promising their sons that someday they'll take them to see Washington DC (but I have a feeling they skip the Pentagon!).

  26. I do believe in fate. I believe that some things just happen for a reason. I think sometimes are destined, but sometimes happen because of the choices you make. Weather they are good or bad, fate will decide what happens. Thanks for the giveaway.

  27. I don't really believe in fate/magic/spells. But I do believe in the power of the mind to make things real if you believe enough. And I also believe in consequences so I guess that could be a bit of fate.

  28. I do believe in fate, but I also believe that we have options in which way we go. :)
I love to read about spells and curses, but do not necessarily believe that they are real.
I have not read one of Cathy's books, but loved the post! Her bio is very interesting. ;)
I will be checking out her website. Besides, I do love historicals about the Scottish!
