The Hawaiian word of the day is
kaikamahine
It is daughter.
On this day in 1813, Jane Austen's PRIDE AND PREJUDICE is first published in the United Kingdom. This timeless story of kaikamahine has inspired many romance authors, including Anne Barton. From her bio,
Anne Barton started swiping romances from her mom’s bookshelf as a teenager and decided historicals (with their balls, dukes, and gowns) were the best. So, when she had the chance to spend a semester in London she packed her bags—and promptly fell in love with the city, its history, and its pubs. She dreamed of writing romance, but somehow ended up a software analyst instead.
Fortunately, a few years and a few careers later, Anne found her way back to writing the stories she loves and won the Romance Writers of America’s Golden Heart® for Regency Historical Romance. She lives in Maryland with her husband and three children, who try valiantly not to roll their eyes whenever she quotes Jane Austen. Her weaknesses include reality TV, cute-but-impractical shoes, and coffee. Lots and lots of coffee.

Kim: Maryland! We lived near Baltimore before we moved to Hawaii .. and we hope to move back there. What's your favorite sight, sound, and smell of the "Old Line State"?
Anne: Wow, I love Maryland, but I'd think Hawaii might be hard to leave for any place! Favorite sight: looking over the water as we drive across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. Sometimes smooth as glass, other times as choppy as the sea, the Bay is always beautiful and welcoming. Favorite sound: the crowd at a Baltimore Orioles game, esp. the big "OH" we shout toward the end of the Star-Spangled Banner. Favorite smell/taste: Old Bay seasoning! Most people use it on crabs, but despite being born and raised in Maryland, I don’t eat crabs. I love Old Bay though, and put it on just about anything that needs a little kick--especially french fries and chicken wings!

Kim: Reality TV - my kids and I are fans of Pawn Stars, Storage Wars, and House Hunters ... because of the educational aspects (history, travel). What's your favorite ... and what do you learn from it?
Anne: I like all of those shows too! Right now I'm really into Duck Dynasty and Dance Moms. Also looking forward to a new season of the Bachelor! I'm just fascinated by the relationships, the different ways of life, and the personalities. A little competition is always fun too.

Kim: London! I grew up visiting my English Granny in Devon. Have you incorporated any of your experiences into your stories?
Anne: How wonderful to be able to visit your granny in Devon! While I was in London I studied English history, drama, literature, and architecture...it was a dream! We took walking tours all over the city to see various buildings, monuments, and museums. One of the opening scenes from WHEN SHE WAS WICKED takes place in Hyde Park, where I often spent Sunday mornings strolling and listening to people at Speakers' Corner. I also had the chance to visit other wonderful places like Bath, Stratford-upon-Avon, and the Lake District. The story I’m currently writing is set largely in and around the beautiful green mountains and deep blue waters of Lakes.

Kim: What inspired your debut, WHEN SHE WAS WICKED?
Anne: I’ve always been drawn to Cinderella stories. Although Anabelle is a penniless seamstress, she dreams of a better life...and love. I thought it would be fun to write about a blackmailer heroine with a moral code. Owen is all about protecting his sisters and the family name, so when he receives a threatening extortion note, he’s determined to discover who’s behind it...and make them pay.

Kim: What's next for Anne Barton?
Anne: My second book, WHEN SHE WAS TEMPTED, comes out this Fall. This story features Anabelle’s sister, Daphne. Everybody thought she was was the good sister, but it turns out she has a couple of secrets of her own!
Mahalo, Anne, for being my guest today! I posted my review of WHEN SHE WAS WICKED on Goodreads at this link. I am giving away a print copy of WHEN SHE WAS WICKED to one randomly selected commenter:
SOME RULES SIMPLY BEG TO BE BROKEN
A dressmaker in London’s busiest shop, Miss Anabelle Honeycote overhears the ton’s steamiest secrets—and (occasionally) uses them to her advantage. It isn’t something she’s proud of, but the reluctant blackmailer needs the money to care for her gravely ill mother. To make up for her misdeeds, Anabelle keeps to a firm set of rules:
Never request payment from someone who cannot afford it.
Never reveal the secrets of a paying client.
Never enter into any form of social interaction with a client.
Her list keeps her (somewhat) honest—until she encounters Owen Sherbourne, the Duke of Huntford. Not only does Owen nip Anabelle’s extortion plans in the bud, the devilishly handsome Duke soon has the sexy seamstress dreaming of more than silks and satins. With Owen, Anabelle enjoys pleasures she never imagined. . . until a scandal from the past resurfaces. Now her rules could mean his family’s ruin. Owen’s searing kisses carry the promise of passion, but how will he react when Anabelle’s most devastating secret is finally revealed?
This book was previously titled THE PROPER MISS’S GUIDE TO BAD BEHAVIOR.

"Persuasion" is my favorite Jane Austen novel.
ReplyDeleteI have only ever read Pride and Prejudice so I guess that is my favorite.
ReplyDeleteMe too. :) I guess I should read more of her books.
ReplyDeleteI love the pictures posted here too. Colors are amazing. Glad I got to meet Anne as well.

Thanks for stopping by, Carol!
DeleteDefinately....Pride and Prejudice!!!
ReplyDeleteAnne, can't wait to read your book, best of luck.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite Jane Austin book is Pride and Prejudice.
Kim, thanks so much for having me, and thanks to everyone for stopping by! I love that "kaikamahine" is the word of the day--definitely seems appropriate--and also that we're celebrating the bicentennial of P&P. It's my favorite Jane Austen novel, but Emma is a close second...
ReplyDeletePride & Prejudice is without question my favorite. I love the part where Elizabeth turns down Mr Darcy's proposal.
ReplyDeleteYES!!! Me too. :)
DeleteA traditionalist: Pride & Prejudice.
ReplyDeleteMaryland Historian Linda Davis Reno published a book about the Maryland 400, for whom the name "Old Line State" was awarded: http://www.marylandsar.org/Maryland_400
Love Elizabeth of course... Pride and Prejudice is a classic for a reason. :)
ReplyDeleteI have two favorite Jane Austen novels, "Pride and Prejudice" and "Persuasion". I loved everything about them.
ReplyDeleteI love anything Regency, and Anne's debut book, "When She Was Wicked", sounds amazing, and I'd love to read it.
I have to admit that it's been so long since I've read a Jane Austen book that I really need to go back and give them rereads!
ReplyDeleteIt's been a long time since I have read any Jane Austen book, but I remember I loved Mr. Darcy. He was so very misunderstood, but he was a good man and was made for Elizabeth Bennet. I loved it when they got their HEA.
ReplyDeleteCongrats to Anne on the new release! I love Jane Austin, I think I devoured her books in practically one sitting when I was in HS :)
ReplyDeleteI love Jane Austin's books and fell in love with them when I picked up a copy of Sense and Sensibility when I was just 14 at our small local library in the village I grew up in.
ReplyDeleteIt opened up an entire new world to me that I didn't know existed and was the very first book that widened my outlook of the world and the role that females played in the different levels of society. Quite an eye opener for a young girl in the early 1960's!
My favorite Jane Austin books are two books that were published after she died, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion and I recently found out they were published in one volume.
Kim, Wouldn't you love to find a copy of that original book at a yard sale? Imagine the pleasure of having them tucked together within the same cover!
PRIDE AND PREJUDICE & Sense & Sensibility Are my favorites of Jane Austen...
ReplyDeleteAnn/alba
Pride and Prejudice is my favorite. Congrats to Anne on the new release!
ReplyDeleteI discovered Jane Austen as an adult. Love them all but P&P stands out!
ReplyDeleteAngela
My favorite Jane Austen story is Pride and Prejudice, but I've enjoyed every Jane Austin story I've read!
ReplyDeleteI hate admitting it, but I have never read any of Jane Austen's books. I only became a fan of romances again a few years ago (after becoming disabled due to an accident) so I have A LOT of catching up to do.
ReplyDeleteI adore Col. Brandon from SENSE AND SENSIBILITY. I do think that Alan Rickman had a lot to do with that actually.
ReplyDeletePride & Predudice does it for me. I always saw myself as Lizzy...from a well to do family with less than the neighbors; shy, thinking romance was a pipe dream. Married 36 years to 'the one', though we kissed MUCH more than Lizzy & Mr. Darcy ever did. Yum!
ReplyDeleteHard to believe but I've never read any Jane Austin books!
ReplyDeleteIt's hard for me to pick a favorite. I love Pride and Prejudice, I think Mr. Darcy was the man that set the bar for all others for me. I adore the story of the Dashwood sisters in Sense and Sesibility. My heart can't resist a good story about a love that was ruined only to be rekindled years later like the one in Persuasion. Although it really was Anne's fault in the first place for rejecting Wentworth, she was just lucky his heart never got over her. But I do have a soft spot in my heart for Emma! She reminds me so much of a friend I had in high school. She was always putting her nose where she shouldn't, trying to dally in match making and always putting her foot in her mouth! And how could I not swoon over Mr. Knightley? I love stories where two friends find true love, with each other...sigh.
ReplyDeleteDid I mention it's hard for me to pick a favorite?
I love any Jane Austen. I think my favorite is Mr Darcy and all the fantastic authors that have played him in the movies. I think my favorite line is a lot of peoples favorite and very used line. The first from Pride & Prejudiced of course which is: "It is a truthe universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife."
ReplyDeleteThanks for the giveaway. I love the title of this book. Have been wanting it. Usually the guy is wicked, not the women.

P&P is our favorite along with Sense and Sensibility. We also love the Baliwood version Bride and Prejudice. Of course the newer version of P &P with Kiera Kniclely is good too, my favorite part being the end, when they kiss and he says Mrs Darcy.

Whenever I see one of the movies or series based on an Austen book playing I'll watch it - even tho even seen them all before (multiple times for most). It would have been great fun to attend one of those parties held to celebrate her birthday.
ReplyDeleteI like pride and prejudice.
ReplyDeletePride and Prejudice is my favorite Austen.
ReplyDeleteI've only read Pride & Prejudice & that was ages ago. I don't quite remember the story anymore!
ReplyDeleteThis quote has been stuck in my head ever since I can remember. “It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.”
ReplyDeleteBut I don't mind though. :D
My favorite now is Persuasion, but it started out as P&P. Mansfield Park is a close third.
ReplyDeleteI *adore* Jane Austen! Pride and Prejudice is my all-time favorite.. everything. Book, couple, quotes. I just love that story line.
ReplyDeletePride and Prejudice is my favorite. It's so much fun to watch Mr. Darcy change from his snobby behavior.
ReplyDeletelove pride and prejudice
