The Hawaiian word of the day is
ho'a'o
It is take a chance.
I'm humming Abba's TAKE A CHANCE ON ME as I write this blog. Anne Gracie incorporates ho'a'o into her new series, the Chance Sisters, with Book 1, THE AUTUMN BRIDE. Anne joins me for a cozy chat ...
| Here's an Autumn Bride in Ko Olina. |
Anne: Hi Kim, thanks so much for having me visit at SOS Aloha.
Kim: I love your bio (at this link). You wrote, "We spent a lot of time driving from one part of Australia to another, visiting relatives or friends or simply to see what was there." Do you characters share the same sense of adventure?
Anne: Thanks. We moved a lot as well, and the year we lived in Scotland when I was eight, we hitched up the caravan every second weekend and explored the British Isles. And on school holidays, we explored Europe and Ireland. I'd swum across the main rivers of Europe by the time I was nine.
My characters do have a sense of adventure — some Regency people traveled a lot. We assume they didn't because of the difficulties, but I've read diaries and letters from people doing the Grand Tour and it wasn't easy, but they did it — even while pregnant. (When the baby was born, it was sent back home with a nursemaid and the tour continued.) And then there was travel because of the army and navy and also the expansion of the British Empire through trade.
So I like to incorporate this world view into some books. I've set a book on the Grand Tour (Tallie's Knight) in France and Spain (The Perfect Stranger) in Egypt (To Catch a Bride) and in Spain (Bride By Mistake). But a lot of readers aren't keen on foreign settings, so my editor prefers me to stick to Britain for my regency-era historicals, and I do try. It's just that every now and then my muse and I get itchy feet. . .
Anne: Hmm, probably the smell of a gum tree (eucalyptus) after rain, especially in summer, when it's been hot. The air beneath the tree is so fresh and clean and fragrant and the hot earth smells so grateful.
Another favorite smell is the scent of a native bush called boronia. For me, it ranks up there with gardenia and daphne and jasmine, IMO.
Sound? I'm pretty fond of birds, and I love their different calls. Bell birds are elusive little critters, but to hear them calling in the bush is magical. When I was a kid I used to think they were fairy bells. This is what they sound like on Youtube (at this link).

I also love the sound of magpies caroling in the morning. You can listen to them at this link.
Favorite sight? So many to choose from. Maybe when you're driving to the beach and you see that first narrow glitter of blue shining on the horizon between the hills.
I also love standing on the edge of the rainforest looking out across the mountains. Where I live is cool, temperate rainforest, not tropical. Think tall trees and masses of tree ferns.

Kim: Tell us about THE AUTUMN BRIDE!
Anne: It's the first book in a series, about four orphan girls — two sisters and two friends, who band together to form a kind of a family. Their situation goes from bad to worse until Abby, my heroine, climbs through the window of a nearby mansion desperately hoping to find something to steal. Instead she finds a bedridden aristocratic old lady at the mercy of her neglectful, rapacious servants. The girls pretend to be Lady Beatrice's nieces and move in with her, sacking the horrible servants. Everyone's happy — until Lady Beatrice's nephew Max returns after nine years in the Far East and is furious to find his aunt under the sway of four pretty impostors.
It's a rags-to-riches, feel-good, fun story with a dark undertow. But mostly it's about the joy of friendship, second chances, sisterhood — and love.
You can read some reviews on my website, annegracie.com, if you want.
Kim: What's next for Anne Gracie?

Kim: What's next for Anne Gracie?
Anne: I'm working on the next book in the series — The Winter Bride. I'm also doing a little bit of traveling — I'm off to Brisbane soon and speaking at the Australian Romance Readers Convention, and in August I'm flying over to Western Australia for the RWA conference. And in October I'm speaking at GenreCon, also in Brisbane, and there's some teaching in between that, as well as writing, of course, so I'm going to be pretty busy.
Thanks Kim for having me.
Thanks Kim for having me.
Mahalo, Anne, for joining me across the Pacific! I posted my review of THE AUTUMN BRIDE on Amazon (at this link) and Goodreads (at this link). Anne is giving away a copy of THE AUTUMN BRIDE to one randomly selected commenter. To enter the giveaway,

Since my hubby is working in Korea, I'd go with Seoul!
2. Comments are open through Saturday, February 16, 10 pm in Hawaii.
3. I'll post the winner on Sunday, February 17.
Mahalo,

I would have to choose Paris or London. I've always wanted to visit, so why not share the joy & love.
ReplyDeleteMary, that sounds wonderful.
DeleteI would like my Valentine's date to be in Scotland.
ReplyDeleteCathy, Scotland in winter might be a mite chilly, but it's a beautful place.
DeleteI would like to have my husband and mine Valentine's date to be in Rome.
ReplyDeleteRome. . . the eternal city. Lovely.
ReplyDeleteI am thinking Ireland. Lots of green and after seeing the movie Leap Year it is a place I would love to visit. All the better if it is Valentinesday :)
ReplyDeleteOh Ireland is beautiful — and so green. Nice choice.
DeleteI'd love to spend Valentine's Day in Tokyo Disneyland -- my husband and I had a chance to visit Tokyo and only had half a day to explore Disneysea -- would love to have a full 12 or 24 hours in Disneyland next time. ^_^
ReplyDeleteThanks for the great giveaway!
What a fun idea, Tin — I didn't even know they had a Disneyland in Tokyo.
ReplyDeleteI'd like to have my Valentine's over in the Philippines where my love is right now.
ReplyDeleteLady Vamp, I've never been to the Philippines, but a good friend of mine lived there for years and so i've always wanted to go.
DeleteBeing from Western Australia, and having got secretly engaged [till we had the ring made in the shape of a Forget-Me-Not] many years ago. If he was still with me I would spend the day with him at home as we have trouble travelling in wheelchairs. I hope to see you in October at the RWA Conference
ReplyDeleteHi Pamela — how very romantic! And yes, I'll definitely be at RWAustralia in August (not October) - come up and say hi.
DeleteI would love to go to the top of the John Hancock Building and have dinner there with my husband and look out at the city of Chicago!
ReplyDeleteDanielle, I have always wanted to explore Chicago, but alas, the airport is the closest I've been. Hope you have lovely Valentine's Day.
DeleteI would love to spend Valentine's Day in Bora Bora. I've seen so many beautiful pictures, and film clips of this, and would love to experience it for myself.
ReplyDeleteHi Diane, Bora Bora sounds amazing. And very romantic.
DeleteI loved Bride by Mistake!
ReplyDeleteI really want to go back to Ireland and Scotland. (sigh)
Thanks LilMissMolly, I'm glad you liked it. Ireland and Scotland are lovely, and I'm sure one day you'll make it back. Happy Valentines.
DeleteI would like to have a picnic under that Eucalyptus Tree in Australia.
ReplyDeleteLOL Debby — that eucalyptus tree is in my front yard. But there are lots of beautiful trees to picnic under here. And in February it's warm. Probably hot.
DeleteHi Anne! I love your books, my fav is Gallant Waif - I cry every time I read it (yes I've reread it several times). Your new series sound wonderful & I can't wait to add it to my collection.
ReplyDeleteI'd choose Italy.
Hi Linda — and how nice of you to say so. Gallant Waif was my first ever book and very dear to my heart.
DeleteItaly.... mmmm.. sounds lovely. Happy Valentines.
I would love to have my Valentine date in Australia. Visiting your country at the top of my Wish Trip List. While there, I would love to visit with you and Anna Campbell for a chat over a pot of tea. I'm so interested in see the topography and the lovely flowers you mentioned. The Boronia is gorgeous and I would love to smell the flowers "in person."
ReplyDeleteI'm just finishing reading "The Autumn Bride" and can tell you I love it! Readers: Run, don't walk to your nearest bookstore and get a copy of this fabulous novel. It's terrific and you won't be able to put it down. Now, I need to get and read more of your novels, Anne. You are a terrific author!! Congratulations on all of your successes.
Connie what a sweetheart you are to say that. Thank you!
DeleteIt would be fun to have you join Anna and me, though logistically tricky because we live nearly a thousand miles apart. Still, if you timed it for the Australian Romance Readers Association convention, which is held every two years, you'd certainly catch us both there.
It's on in a few weeks in Brisbane.
Have a lovely Valentine's Day.
Rome... I think.
ReplyDeleteNice choice, May.
DeleteScotland and Wales. I'd love to see the beautiful countryside, and the castles.
ReplyDeleteSounds lovely, Joanne.
DeleteThat's so hard, there are so many places - Either Paris or Hawaii - both have lovely memories.
ReplyDeleteBoth sound lovely to me. next time I go to the US I hope to have a stopover in Hawaii. It's been too long.
DeleteThat is tough but I think I would pick Paris.
ReplyDeleteI've been in Paris in February and it's cold but still magic..
DeleteSouthern France, as I've not been there.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a beautiful choice, Liz.
DeleteCongrats to Anne on the new release. I would choose Venice so that we could ride in a gondola.
ReplyDeleteThanks Jane — oh, yes, Venice would be magic.
DeleteBora Bora, Tahiti!
ReplyDeleteHeading for the warmth, Linda? Both sound lovely.
DeleteCongrats on the new release! I would love to be in Ireland. Has always wanted to go there.
ReplyDeleteMel

Thank you Mel. Ireland is indeed a lovely place. Happy Valentines.
ReplyDeleteI think Hawaii would be a great place for Valentine's Day!
ReplyDeleteHawaii would be lovely. Hope you have a happy Valentine's Day
DeleteNew Zealand... it's beautiful there!
ReplyDeleteHappy Saint Valentine's Day!! Hope your day is filled romance and much love!
mestith (at) gmail (dot) com
New Zealand is very beautiful, you're right, Meghan. I hope you have a wonderful Valentine's day, too. Thank you.
DeleteI'm really looking forward to reading The Autumn Bride, it sounds like such a great story. I would choose London for my Valentine's date, it would be a dream come true to visit London.
ReplyDeleteHi Barbara, I'd love to go to London, too. It's been years since i was there. I hope you have a lovely day on the 14th. Thanks for dropping by.
ReplyDeleteI would love to have my date in Jamaica! As the old TV ads used to tell us....Jamaica is for Lovers!!
ReplyDeleteI'll come with you, Betty -- not to play gooseberry, but because I've always wanted to go ti Jamaica. As a small girl I fell in love with the accents of the West Indian commentators while my dad listened to the cricket.
DeleteItaly. I'd like to find out if the Venetian legend about couples kissing under the Bridge of Sighs at Sunset in Venice while on a Gondola is true. :D
ReplyDeleteSo, Lory, you're going to Venice purely for research purposes? ;) It's a tough job, but somebody's gotta do it. Happy Valentine's Day.
DeleteI'd go for Tuscany... love the food and wine! And please accept my compliments on the beautiful cover of Autumn Bride... lovely dress and flowers!
ReplyDeleteMmmm Tuscany -- good choice. Beauty, and good food and wine. Hope the company is just as fabulous.
DeleteFor me it is a tie between Hawaii and Scotland
ReplyDeleteDanny at this time of year I'd choose Hawaii and have your guy put on a kilt. ;)
DeleteGreat and interesting interview. I don't see why max would be mad, they saved her from the horrible servants!
ReplyDeleteI'd go to Scotland. Although reading all you said you see and hear down under it sounds great too.
Z
Hi Z -- at this stage he doesn't know that. He thinks they're the reason she's in a bad way.
DeleteScotland is lovely -- though cold this time of year. I lived there for a year when I was 8. Rug up and find a lovely cottage or castle with a big fire. And tak a wee dram of whisky. (not whiskey, which is Irish)
Paris
ReplyDeleteSounds good to me.
DeleteI think I would love it to in Aruba. I want it to be someplace warm.
ReplyDeleteAruba would certainly warm. No idea what it's like there. I had to look it up to see where it was.
DeleteNew Orleans!! or Paris! Thanks for the chance.
ReplyDeletemlawson17 at hotmail dot com
So it's the French thing you're after? Can't argue with that. I'd go to either of those places in a heartbeat.
DeleteAnywhere my husband is would be perfect. He's on a business trip, so I don't really have anything special to do this year.
ReplyDeleteShame he couldn't take you with him for Valentine's Day. I hope he makes it up to you when he comes home. :)
DeleteI'd have to say the Virgin Islands :)
ReplyDeleteMmm, friends of mine went there recently and it sounds gorgeous.
DeleteI'd pick Venice - it's a lovely place to wander around and the gondola rides can be very romantic.
