Today we celebrate Hawaii's 52nd anniversary as an US State. It is a state holiday and my family is off to the Big Island. Hawaii is truly a state of mind ... one I share with you with the words from Queen Lili'uokalani - ALOHA 'OE:
Ha`aheo ka ua i nâ pali
Ke nihi a`ela i ka nahele
E hahai (uhai) ana paha i ka liko
Pua `âhihi lehua o uka
Hui
Aloha `oe, aloha `oe
E ke onaona noho i ka lipo
One fond embrace,
A ho`i a`e au
Until we meet again
`O ka hali`a aloha i hiki mai
Ke hone a`e nei i
Ku`u manawa
`O `oe nô ka`u ipo aloha
A loko e hana nei
Maopopo ku`u `ike i ka nani
Nâ pua rose o Maunawili
I laila hia`ia nâ manu
Miki`ala i ka nani o ka lipo
Translation:
Proudly swept the rain by the cliffs
As it glided through the trees
Still following ever the bud
The `ahihi lehua of the vale
Chorus
Farewell to you, farewell to you
The charming one who dwells in the shaded bowers
One fond embrace,
‘Ere I depart
Until we meet again
Sweet memories come back to me
Bringing fresh remembrances
Of the past
Dearest one, yes, you are mine own
From you, true love shall never depart
I have seen and watched your loveliness
The sweet rose of Maunawili
And ’tis there the birds of love dwell
And sip the honey from your lips
Mahalo,
Kim in Hawaii

ReplyDeleteCongratulaions to Hawaii on their 52nd birthday. I hope that you and your family have a wonderful time at the Big Island this weekend.
ReplyDeleteI have to tell you that I fell in love with Hawaii after watching Elvis' movie "Blue Hawaii". I was so fascinated by the scenery, the vibrant colors and the people, that I saw the film 11 times. I still remember every song by heart that Elvis sang. Oh, I also still have the LP. For those of you that don't know what an "LP" is, it's a record :-)
Celebrating Hawaii as a state! Congrats
ReplyDeleteHave a great time on the Big Island!

ReplyDeleteHi Kim!
ReplyDeleteHappy 52nd anniversary of Hawaii becoming a US State! I can still remember hearing the news of Hawaii becoming a State when I was in the 6th grade! I can still remember us all cheering in our classroom when our teacher announced the news!
I admit that when I read the words from Queen Lili'uokalani above (before I read the translation) and read the last sentence of the 2nd stanza ("Until we meet again") my memories took me back to my childhood and the song by Dale Evans and Roy Rogers!
For those of your readers who may be too young to have watched their Saturday TV show (on a black and white TV) it was a song we all knew all the words to and I still remember today. Since you shared Hawaii's song, I would like to share with all of you their song!
Happy trails to you, until we meet again.
Happy trails to you, keep smilin' until then.
Who cares about the clouds when we're together?
Just sing a song and bring the sunny weather.
Happy trails to you, 'till we meet again.
Some trails are happy ones,
Others are blue.
It's the way you ride the trail that counts,
Here's a happy one for you.
Happy trails to you, until we meet again.
Happy trails to you, keep smilin' until then.
Who cares about the clouds when we're together?
Just sing a song and bring the sunny weather.
Happy trails to you, 'till we meet again.
Who among us doesn't wish that wish for people all over the world!
Happy Anniversary Hawaii! Beautiful song. I'm sure it sounds better in their native language than in English though. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing, Kim.
That was lovely.
