Aloha to Melissa Cutler and ONE HOT SUMMER (One and Only Texas) - Book Review

Welcome to Dulcet, Texas, home of the legendary Briscoe Ranch Resort, where one woman will discover that even love is bigger in the Lone Star State.

Celebrity wedding planner Remedy Lane is Hollywood royalty—until a scandal sends her packing to the wilds of Texas. She has a knack for leaving disaster in her wake, but she’s determined to reboot her career at Briscoe Ranch, a luxury resort known for extravagant weddings. Little does she know that weddings don’t happen at the resort without the approval of the town’s cowboy-swaggering, too-hot-for-his-own-good fire chief, Micah Garrity.

Micah knows trouble when he sees it, and all it takes is one glimpse of Remedy’s princess airs for him to know he’s met his match. Too bad he can’t stop thinking about her—even when she brings about one disaster after another at the resort. He and Remedy clash at every turn, but they can’t stop the sparks flying between them. They come from such different worlds—does love stand a chance or will this fire burn too hot for either of them to handle?

Savage Volunteer Firehouse

Summer turns me upside down. - The Cars, "Magic"

Remedy Lane arrives at the legendary Briscoe Ranch resort to resurrect her career as a wedding planner.  Micah Garrity stands in her way as the fire chief/fire marshal who takes exception to the resort's lax compliance with fire codes.  Micah knows first hand how fire can scar families. He has no intention of being distracted by a sweet talking Californian transplant.

Cutler also balances the serious undertones of fire safety with physical comedy - Remedy is a walking disaster waiting to happen. Despite her clumsy persona, Remedy radiates raw sexuality that draws Micah into her world.  Cutler delivers snappy dialogue as the city girl squares off with the country boy for one hot summer.

Recommended read for fans of heroes with swagger and heroines with grit.

I received a print copy from the author for an honest review.

Melissa offers an excerpt from ONE HOT SUMMER ...

“How is it that you have the power to wrap every man you see around your little finger?” Micah said, nodding to the groomsmen in the distance.

“Except you,” Remedy tossed out with a shrug.

“I’m impervious to your feminine wiles. Unlike those half- wit groomsmen.”

With a wry smile, she ran her hands down her dress. “Look at me. I’m unobtainable and dressed like a virgin librarian. All those guys you saw want to be the one man with the macho power to corrupt my innocence and introduce me to the world’s many wicked pleasures.”

He laughed at the deprecating self- descriptor. Yeah, her getup was drab as hell, but still, a virgin librarian she was not. “It’s a good thing they didn’t see you prancing around in that bikini at the picnic at the river or they’d realize they’re the ones in danger of being corrupted by your wicked ways.”

An image rolled through his mind about the way her water- slick, tanned curves had writhed and bounced as Chet and Dusty had dragged her into the river shallows and tried to teach her how to two- step. Shifting, his body turning restless, he locked his jaw and set his focus on the stars lifting up from the dark silhouettes of the hilltops.

He could not have this woman. He had rules against that kind of fraternization for a reason.

Her voice cut through his self- flagellation. “Are you making a crack about my virtue? Because my virtue happens to love this season’s Dolce & Gabbana swimwear collection, thank you very much.”

That was the most ridiculous sentence he’d heard uttered outside of his TV set. He pinched the bridge of his nose against smiling, but a snort of laughter still managed to escape. Man, was she out of place in Ravel County. He flicked a glance in her direction, valiantly fighting the urge— and failing—to rake his gaze over her body. “Don’t get me started about how those itty- bitty pieces of fabric you were wearing at the river threatened to corrupt my virtue.”

He braced himself for a witty retort or scathing commentary on the irredeemable nature of his virtue, but she didn’t take the softball pitch he’d tossed her. From the corner of his eye he watched her shoulders lift as she inhaled deeply.

On a purr of an exhale, she smiled, triumphant. “Mmm. Chief Garrity, I love knowing how much that bothered you.”

The huskiness in her voice stripped him of all control. Done fighting the urge to drink his fill of her, he tore his gaze from the horizon, but all he caught was her trademark sashay as she left him in her dust and walked into the tent. Whistling under his breath, he spun away from the reception and started back toward his truck. Time for him to get the hell out of California’s orbit before he lost his careful control and fell into rank with the groomsmen trailing behind her like a pack of fools.

Melissa joins us for a cozy chat ...

Kim:  San Diego! What is your favorite sight, sound, and smell of "America's Finest City"?

Melissa:  I love living in San Diego, though I grew up 100 miles north of it, in Orange County. My favorite part of living here in SD is the atmosphere. San Diego is an amazing cross-section of cultures. It’s got a California laid back vibe blended with the vibrancy and complexity of having a huge military community here, as well as many top-notch colleges and universities. Also, the close proximity to Mexico enriches our city with a wonderfully diverse element. My husband and I vacation in Mexico a lot, so having the border be only a 30 minute drive from our house is convenient.

Kim: What's your favorite lines/scenes from Bull Durham and Ferris Bueller's Day Off? Mine from FB is Ben Stein's Anyone? Anyone?

Melissa:  I love every scene in Bull Durham! One of my favorite funny scenes is when the team gathers around the pitcher’s mound to discuss their problems. And Kevin Costner and Susan Sarandon’s first love scene set the bar for the love scenes that I write in my books.

As for Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, I adore Cameron. So much. So pretty much every scene that he features prominently in is a favorite of mine. “Ferris Bueller, you’re my hero” is one of my favorite lines.

Kim:  Who or what helped you along the path to publishing?

Melissa:  I’ve had a lot of help along my publishing journey, from published author mentors and editors who gave me my first big breaks to my husband and mom watching the kids so I have time to write. I also credit Romance Writers of America for being an invaluable resource and gathering place. When I joined that organization, I felt like I was home, for the first time in my life. I’d found my people.

Kim:  Tell us about the Bomb Squad Hockey Series and your new release GAME CHANGER - what inspired them?

Melissa:  My original inspiration for the Bomb Squad Hockey Series was former Marine Alex Minsky, who became a fitness model after losing his leg while on deployment. I love his message and his openness about the ups and downs of his journey since becoming an amputee. That’s how I decided to write about a group of combat wounded veterans

Around the same time that Alex Misky’s fame was blossoming, the winter Olympics were on. I was so inspired by the Paralympic ice hockey teams that I asked “What if there was a wounded warrior ice hockey team?” Within a few minutes of research, I found out that there already are real life wounded soldier ice hockey teams all around the world. And so my fictional team, Bomb Squad, was born.

What’s neat about GAME CHANGER, my third book in the series, is that it’s the storyline that originally inspired me: a story about a former soldier who lost his leg in combat, then becomes a fitness model and is on a trajectory to fame, and who has the goal to uplift other wounded veterans. I wanted to give him an epic love story, and I do believe I accomplished that with this book.

Kim:  What's next for Melissa Cutler?

Melissa:  What’s next for me is a return to cowboys! In the spring of next year, I’m launching a new contemporary romance series about the employees of a luxury resort in Central Texas based on the world I created in my 2014 novella THE MISTLETOE EFFECT. I can’t wait!

Mahalo, Melissa, for joining us today!  And congratulations on GAME CHANGER:

Welcome to Destiny Falls, New York, home of Bomb Squad--an ice hockey team full of rugged military heroes. A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity has the team captain packing his bags for greener pastures, but saying good-bye to the woman who'd captured his heart is easier said than done...

After being wounded in combat, Brandon Theroux lives every day like it's his last. He never could have imagined that the sleek mechanics of his prosthetic leg would open so many doors, including minor celebrity status as a fitness model and a well-earned reputation as a rakish playboy. The only door it hasn't opened is the one to Harper Johnson's bedroom.

Harper has too much self-respect to join the ranks of Brandon's "carpe diem" conquests, but when a health scare catapults her onto a journey of a lifetime, she turns to the one person who knows what it means to seize the day, find your bliss, and never look back. But a bond forged between friends who can't keep their hands off each other has the potential to be a whole lot hotter than either of them is prepared to handle...

Books in the Bomb Squad hockey series:

Risky Business (Bomb Squad #1)- August 2014

Undefeated (Bomb Squad #2) - November 2014

Game Changer (Bomb Squad #3) - May 2015
