Making A Hero
I love making heroes. That's one great thing about writing romance. You can combine all the characteristics of a man you love and create the superhero of heroes. I have three boys (one husband and two children). They talk about their favorite superheroes or what powers they'd like to have. The ability to fly, laser beam eyes, a grip of death. How come they get to have all the fun?
I like a strong alpha male. I work full-time, deal with three boys, soccer and lacrosse practice, cooking dinner, permission slips--you know the drill. So when I get time to sit down and read a great romance, I want a man who takes over, will do anything to protect and save the heroine. Perhaps not a Dominant as portrayed in many an erotic romance these days, but a guy who knows what he wants (the heroine) and isn't afraid to do anything to get her. Oh yeah.
So when I write a hero in my books, I make him the man of my dreams. My superhero. He might not be go-go Gadget with bionic abilities, but if just his stare can get my heart aflutter, it's a pretty good start.
How about you? What are your hero's superpowers? Curly locks? Sweet gestures? Dark brown eyes?
Here's a small insight into Jake Griffin, my hero for Hot Pursuit:
Now, in a life-changing moment, I wanted, needed, to discover what haunted Anna so I could protect her. During my stint in the Army, with the police, I’d been sworn to protect and serve. The words had meant nothing before. Only another deployment, another assignment. Just one brush of her body against mine, her slim fingers clenching into my jacket, and I was done for. She slayed me with just the feel of her skin beneath my palms. I hadn’t felt this thing with Nadine in all the time we were married, but I felt it now.
It wasn’t about being an undercover agent doing my job anymore. Screw Moretti. It was about being a man. And she was going to be my woman. She just didn’t know it yet.
Hot Pursuit 3 Blurb-
Anna Scott has given Nick everything. Her heart, her body, and the truth about her past. But every action has consequences, and now, thanks to her, Nick is in more trouble than ever. He's running from his old boss, distracted from his undercover work, and secretly negotiating with the most powerful mafia boss in New York. She knows the only way to free him is to step into the spotlight once more and face her enemies. She is convinced that Nick must stay in the shadows to be safe, but the stubborn man isn't cooperating. Once she learns the truth about him--that he's really Jake Griffin--she realizes that his sense of honor and duty will get him killed. Protecting the man she loves is the only thing that matters to her now, no matter the cost.
Jake Griffin is in love with a woman on the run. The woman he knew and fell in love with was an illusion born of desperation. Anna Scott has powerful enemies and blood in her past, but neither can deny the passion between them. Grif will do whatever it takes to help her, including recruiting a notorious killer to help him. Grif will walk the razor's edge between right and wrong, good and evil, truth and lies, because Anna Scott is everything to him now, and he'll play any game, take any risk to save her from the monsters in her past, and from herself.

Jennifer Zane has lived all over the country--from Georgia to Maryland, New York to Colorado, including an exciting five years in Montana. Her time in Big Sky country was the basis for this book. When she's not writing, she savors the insanity of raising two boys, is figuring out how many meals she can make with a pressure cooker, and teaches a pretty mean karate class. She currently lives with her family in Colorado.

Always nice to hear about a new to me author!
ReplyDeleteI think it would be a lot of fun to create your own hero.
ReplyDeleteMy hero must be tall, with sandy color hair and blue eyes....the exact opposite of my husband.
ReplyDeleteMy hero must be serious but kind and willing to compromise. Oh and blond hair with sparkling blue eyes would be good too :)
ReplyDeleteI like a tall, muscular guy with dark hair.... glad to find another author to read!
ReplyDeleteThanks for all the great hero comments--there's never enough heroes out there!
ReplyDeleteI like a hero that takes charge. I do that all day long and it would be great if he could just take over for awhile.-- Jennifer Zane
I like a strong hero but with a good sense of humor.

Great post! I, too, have all boys. I love how you explain the hero that you want (to read about). I agree with you. I love a man who can take control, who has a strong personality and is loyal.
ReplyDeletePreferably with dark hair, dark eyes and on the larger side (over 6 ft). :)
