Aloha to Máire Claremont and THE DARK AFFAIR

Today is the feast day for St. Fridolin.   He hailed from a noble family in Ireland, but followed his calling as a missionary among pagans on the Continent in the 6th century.

Fridolin shares his Irish ancestry and a compassionate heart with the heroine from Máire Claremont's new release, THE DARK AFFAIR:

The Victorian era was full of majestic beauty and scandalous secrets—a time when corsets were the least of a woman’s restrictions, and men could kill or be killed in the name of honor…...

Lady Margaret Cassidy left a life of nobility behind in Ireland, forsaking her grieving homeland to aid war-ravaged men in England. Still, she never expected a cruel turn of fate to lock her into an unwanted betrothal with one of her English patients—much less one as broken and dangerous as Viscount Powers.

Wrecked by his tragic past, Powers’ opiate-addled sanity hangs precariously in the balance, leaving him poised to destroy anyone who dares to utter the names of the wife and child he still so deeply mourns. So when he is forced to marry Margaret in exchange for freedom, he is shocked by the desire to earn her trust, her body, and—most alarming of all—her heart….

2011 Golden Heart winner Máire Claremont first fell in love with Mr. Rochester, not Mr. Darcy. Drawn to his dark snark, she longed to find a tortured hero of her own… until she realized the ramifications of Mr. Rochester locking his frst wife up in his attic. Discovering the errors of her ways, Máire now looks for a real-life Darcy and creates deliciously dark heroes on the page. Oh, and she wants everyone to know her name is pronounced Moira. Her parents just had to give her an Irish Gaelic name.

Máire offers an excerpt from THE DARK AFFAIR:

The room looped and James closed his eyes, desperately trying to keep his footing. He reached out and grabbed her wrist. “I don’t believe you.”

She tensed but didn’t scream. She didn’t make a sound. Only locked gazes with him, daring him. Daring him to make the right choice and not the mad one. Even so, now that his fingers had encompassed her wrist, he couldn’t help but savor the feel of her delicate bones and smooth skin under his roughened hands. It was as though he’d latched onto an anchor that would keep him from drifting wildly on raging seas.

“I know when I see a man stewin’ in his own pain,” she said softly. “Why don’t you tell me about it?”

He snorted. “I don’t want anyone’s help. And I am not talking to you about such things.”

“Sure, and could you not make an exception given the unusual circumstances?” she asked. “You don’t want to stay here until they truss you up like a Christmas goose.”

Good sodding Christ. How in the hell had he ended up here? In this room. With this this cool as steel Irish lass, passing off imprisonment as a joke? He, Viscount Powers, in a madhouse. Oh. . . Yes. His father had tossed him here. But for what reason? Because he’d gone on a few benders in the course of a few weeks? What man didn’t? Granted, the last had been particularly bad. He could scarcely recall many days, just bruised and bloodied knuckles and the scent of opium smoke. That hardly seemed--

“Are you listening, James? If you are, I’d be grateful, if you’d let go my arm.”

Instead of letting go, he slowly inched her forward and slid his fingers about hers until he was holding her hand just like a suitor strolling through the park. She wanted to be intimate, did she? “Your name then?”

A muscle twitched in her cheek at his newly enforced, but gentle touch. “Margaret.”

He smiled grimly. “Maggie.”

“Margaret,” she corrected.

He dropped her hand and took a pointed step back from her, his own gaze hot as he weaved slightly. “Maggie, you call me James one more time, and I will stuff my bedclothes down your lily-hued throat.”

She staggered a little at his sudden movement but then righted herself by smoothing her hands down the front of her skirts. “What a colorful and interesting proposition.”

“Interesting?” he echoed, disbelief rattling through him mixing with the liquid hot feel of his muscles and bones. Why the hell wouldn’t she go away as all the others had done? Either she had a death wish or she was incredibly dense. He was guessing on the former.

She nodded, her eyes traveling over to the mattress which was clearly bare of linen. “Do you like being medicated, my lord?”

He shook his head slightly, fighting off the fog that had been rolling in and out of his life these last days. “Medicated?”

“Sure and they’ve been giving you morphine,” she said softly. “Were you not aware?”

He tore his gaze from her and let his attention dart around the room. Searching for something, anything to hold him as panic began its evil dance inside him. Morphine? No wonder he felt lost. Lost. So lost and furious. Futile desperation crawled into his gut. How could he make them stop giving him the stuff? Just so he could have a little clarity. A little time. A little time to prove he was not completely out of control. “No. I didn’t. I knew--”

She sidestepped a little, looking toward the door. “Something wasn’t quite right?”

He gave a curt nod, his teeth grinding as he clamped his jaw tight.

She turned her so serene face back to him then said solemnly, “Will you talk about Sophia if you refuse to talk aught about yourself?”

The fight which had been so ready to burst in him fizzled down to the burning plight of ashes doused in London’s debilitating rain. All he wanted to do was drag his tired body to the bed, collapse upon it, and curl into a conciliating ball. “She’s dead.” The words reverberated through the room, bouncing in the cold air around him, like cruel, north Essex mocking birds that would not cease their chatter.

“All the more reason to recollect her, I should think.”

He frowned, sorting through her collection of words slowly, carefully, wondering. “Should you?”

That face of hers, like all the virgins in all the cathedrals in every godforsaken place in Europe, stared back at him, so calm, so unaffected by his wildness, so full of. . . perfection.

Perfection, he found, was usually a meticulously created guise to hide something horrible beneath. What horrors did she hold beneath her porcelain façade? Perhaps, he should endeavor to interrogate her.

He smiled dryly. “And do you like to recollect your dead, Maggie?”

Her shoulders tensed under the pressed wool molded to her bodice. “I do.”

Shaking his head, he lifted a finger and wagged it at her. “You’re lying.”

It was tempting to let his shoulders collapse and break under the weariness of humanity. Everyone lied. Everyone betrayed. Even the dead. The ones lost to him. But in the end, hadn’t he been the greatest betrayer of them all?

He pinned her with his gaze, challenging her to continue, wishing to a god he didn’t believe in that she would just give up and go. For he would not ever allow her to see his true face. No one was allowed to see that now.

Aloha to Kimberly Kincaid and TURN UP THE HEAT - A Pine Mountain Novel

18051946

My backyard looks like the cover of TURN UP THE HEAT - at least the snow covered pines.  Our recent snowstorm has me thinking, TURN UP THE HEAT:

There are only so many times a girl can hear those words before she believes that it is, in fact, very much her. Unexpectedly jilted by her locally famous boyfriend and haunted by a boss who makes Attila the Hun look like a lap dog, Bellamy Blake does what any self-respecting girl in her shoes would do. She rounds up her two best girlfriends and makes plans to get the hell out of Dodge.

But Bellamy's escape plan takes a nose dive on the side of rural route 164 when her transmission self-destructs, leaving her in the middle of a cell phone dead zone with nothing but her wits. Oh, and Shane Griffin, the hottest mechanic who's ever checked under her hood.

Yet this small-town man isn't all he seems. Can Shane and Bellamy prove that sometimes the most unlikely ingredients make the most deliciously sexy mix?

Kimberly Kincaid writes contemporary romance novels that split the difference between sexy and sweet, taking the traditional idea of boy-meets-girl and infusing it with a sassy magic all her own. She believes in fiery yet flawed characters destined for a crash-course in falling in love-- usually the hard way-- and injects her trademark humor as well as poignant touches into her writing to create her stories.

Kimberly's writing journey has led down some bumpy roads (that first manuscript is under the bed, where it is very likely to stay), but there has been some fresh pavement too (her second manuscript earned her very first contest final, and landed the fantastic Maureen Walters at the Curtis Brown Literary Agency). One thing is certain -- the wild ride of being a writer is a lot richer in both its ups and downs because of friends and readers along the path.

When Kimberly's not sitting cross-legged in an ancient desk chair known as "The Pleather Bomber", she can be found practicing obscene amounts of yoga, whipping up anything from enchiladas to eclairs in her kitchen, or curled up with her nose in a book. She resides in northern Virginia with her wildly patient husband and their three daughters.

The Scouts camped on Pine Mountain ...

I am looking forward to seeing Kimberly Kincaid this weekend at Lady Jane's Salon/Silver Spring (link).   I have one copy of TURN UP THE HEAT, courtesy of Kensington, to giveaway to one randomly selected commenter.  To enter the giveaway,

1.  Let's talk about car mechanics - can you fix your own car or do you need a sexy mechanic to help you out?   I'm hopeless ... and the mechanics on base are helpful but not necessarily sexy.

2.  This giveaway is open to all readers.

3.  Comments are open through Saturday, March 8, 10 pm in Baltimore.  I'll post the winner on Sunday, March 9.

Aloha to Mary Behre and SPIRITED (A Tidewater Novel)

Spir·it·ed [spir-i-tid]
adjective
having or showing mettle, courage, vigor, liveliness, etc.: a spirited defense of romance.

Mary Behre joins me today to celebrate her debut paranormal romance, SPIRITED.   From her bio (link),

Mary Behre is the lone female in a house full of males and the undisputed queen of her domain. She even has the glittery tiara to prove it. She loves stories with humor, ghosts, mysteries and above all else, a good romance. When not writing, she enjoys reading, gluten-free baking, and hanging out at the beach with the most important men in her life, her family.

Her debut paranormal romance, SPIRITED (Tidewater Novel #1) was an award-winning manuscript before it sold to Berkley Sensation. The Tidewater Series is mix of humor, suspense, and a psychic love-connection. The first three stories are about three sisters separated years before in the foster care system. As they search for love, each other, and a way to live with their psychic abilities, they’re tossed into the middle of mysteries that only their unique gifts can help solve.

Kim:  We are nosy at SOS Aloha. Can you share a favorite sight, sound, and smell from your part of the country?

Mary:  Ooh, that's easy because they're all one thing. The ocean. I love listening to the waves crash on the shore. I love watching the sunrise on the ocean. And nothing beats the smell of salt air at the beach. If I could live anywhere in the world, it would be near the Atlantic Ocean.

Kim:  I am curious about the tiara - where did you find it? Where do you where it?!?

Mary:  I have several tiaras now. I received several plastic ones over the years but received a nice one for my 40th birthday. I wear it proudly on my birthday every year. As to where I wear it, any place I happen to be on my birthday. I wore out to brunch once and several little girls commented to their mammas that they wanted crowns like mine. LOL!

Kim:  It would be perfect for RT!

Mary:  I'm definitely bringing it to RT! It'll be after my birthday, but it'll also be my first time in New Orleans and my first trip to RT so I'm going to live large.

Kim:  Gluten Free Baking - what's the easiest recipe you've made? The hardest?

Mary:   The easiest recipe I ever made was my Gluten-Free Brownies.

1 C of Melted Butter
2/3 C of cocoa powder
2 C of sugar
4 Eggs
3/4 C All-Purpose Gluten-Free Flour
1/4 C Garbanzo Bean Flour
1 tsp Baking Powder
1 tsp Xanthan Gum
1 C Semi-Sweet Chocolate Morsels

Toss everything but the semi-sweet morsels into a bowl and mix until well blended. Stir in chocolate chips. Pour into a greased 9" cake pan and bake for 40 minutes in an oven preheated to 350.

The hardest recipe I've had to bake is sugar cookies. Sugar cookies are pretty unforgiving when it comes to taste, you either succeeded or you failed epically! It took me 4 years to perfect my recipe for sugar cookies.

2 C All-Purpose Gluten-Free Flour
1/4 C Garbanzo Bean Flour (this gives the cookies the best texture)
1/2 tsp cream of tartar
1/2 tsp Xanthan Gum
Pinch of Salt
1/2 C Butter
1/2 C Powdered Sugar
1/2 C Granulated Sugar
1 Egg (large)
1/2 C Vegetable Oil
2 tsp Pure Vanilla Extract

In small bowl mix flours, cream of tartar, xanthan gum, and salt. In a large bowl beat butter and sugars until creamy, add egg, oil and vanilla. Beat flour mixture into large bowl. Cover and set in refrigerator over night. Next day, form a small ball of dough and set it on parchment covered cookie sheet. Using cookie cutters, shape the dough by peeling excess dough from around the outside of the cutter. Repeat with each cookie. (This recipe is too soft to shape the dough on another surface and transfer to the cookie sheet. I tried.)

After all the cookies are arranged 2" apart on the cookie sheet, bake at 350 degrees for 9-11 minutes.

These cookies are a lot of work but they melt in your mouth.

Kim:  Yum!  Who or what inspired you to jump into romance writing?

Mary:  I'm not sure what inspired me to write romance. I guess it's because I love happy endings. If I watch a movie or read a book, I want that happy ending. And what could be happier that people finding their soul mates?

Kim:  Tell us about your Tidewater series and Book 1, SPIRITED!

Mary:  The Tidewater Series is a paranormal romance set in Southeastern Virginia. There's humor, suspense and a psychic-love connection.

SPIRITED (A Tidewater Novel #1) is about Jules and Seth.

She’s running from who she is…

All Jules Scott wants is to live a normal, quiet life–preferably one that doesn’t include ghosts. Jules’s ability for communicating with the dead has brought her nothing but trouble. Despite her best efforts, needy spirits always find her and draw her into their otherworldly drama. When one implicates her in a series of deadly crimes, she may need to entrust her secrets to the person least likely to believe her…

He’ll do whatever it takes to catch her.

Detective Seth English can’t get distracted from the big case he’s working on, not even by his alluring new neighbor. He doesn’t believe that Jules had anything to do with the string of robberies-turned-murders that he’s investigating, but when she keeps showing up in all the wrong places, his gut tells him she knows more than she’s letting on. To solve his case, he’ll need to expose what the sexy redhead is hiding–no matter how impossible the truth may be…

Kim:  What's next for Mary Behre?

Mary:  Lots! This Saturday, March 8th, I'll be signing books at Books-A-Million in Fredericksburg, VA. In April, I'll be appearing at Lady Jane's Salon in Silver Spring. Then in May I'll be at RT. In June, I'll be a featured author at the Frederick Book Festival. Finally, in July, I'll be at the RWA Convention.

In August, GUARDED (Tidewater Series #2), comes out. GUARDED tells Shelley & Dev's story.

She’s given up on finding love…

Veterinarian Shelley Morgan has always preferred animals to humans, and not simply because she can communicate with them psychically. Unlike most people she’s known, animals have never broken her heart. But after six months in her new town, some of her favorite four-legged companions begin disappearing from the local zoo. Determined to track down the animals and their thief, the telepathic vet decides to investigate, unknowingly delving into a deadly mystery…

He’s ready to make her heart go wild…

Although his bear-like physique has been an advantage in the Tidewater Police Department, Dev Jones’s size often intimidates people. Only Shelley has seen past his massive build to the intelligent man inside, but that was years ago. So when she contacts him requesting his help to solve a series of animal kidnappings, he’s eager to reconnect with her. When the thefts escalate to murder and all the evidence points to Shelley as the killer, Dev faces a devastating choice: forsake his career or risk losing the woman he’s grown to love…

Thank you for having me as a guest today!

Now, it's the reader's turn. Answer the question in the comments section for a chance to win a copy of SPIRITED and a prize pack. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live and why?

Cover Reveal - Cathy Maxwell's THE GROOM SAYS YES

It's my party and I'll reveal if I want to!  We're celebrating the fourth anniversary of SOS Aloha (link).   I am honored to host the cover reveal of Cathy Maxwell's THE GROOM SAYS YES, Book Three in The Brides of Wishmore series:

New York Times bestselling author Cathy Maxwell delivers a dazzling new series—The Brides of Wishmore

He had a noose around his neck and a price on his head --

Sabrina Davidson, dutiful daughter, avowed spinster, thought she’d secured a place for herself in Aberfeldy society—and then her hard-earned acceptance of her fate is challenged by the arrival of Cormac Enright, trained physician, soldier of fortune, earl of Ballin and convicted felon.

A prim and proper miss was the last thing he needed--

Mac is determined to clear his name, but first he has to find the man whose testimony sentenced him to a hangman’s noose. Of course, Robert Davidson is missing and protecting him is his daughter, the most entrancing, frustrating, beguiling, stubborn woman Mac has ever met.

And it doesn’t helped that he has already tasted her kisses. Or that he has found in her a passion for life and adventure to rival his own.

Mac has turned Sabrina’s world inside out—but what will happen when he leaves?

Or will the Groom Say Yes?

Sigh.  The talented artists at Avon Romance deliver another cover that is simply breathtaking!  Are you ready for the groom to say yes?  You'll have to wait 'til the fall .... but I know fans won't be disappointed ... check out my reviews of THE BRIDE SAYS NO (link) and THE BRIDE SAYS MAYBE (link).

4th Anniversary of SOS Aloha

Monday, March 3, is the fourth anniversary of SOS Aloha!   The purpose of the blog - celebrate romance books and promote military families - began at the 2007 RT Booklovers' Convention in Houston.  It was my second convention and I became the Master of Ceremony at the SOS Military Mixer.

The following year, Fabio and Steely McBeam  joined us in Pittsburgh for the SOS Military Mixer.   2009 was a banner year - my husband sang the National Anthem at the SOS Military Mixer.  No sooner did we return to Baltimore that we received news we were moving to Hawaii!   I wasn't sure how this long distance thing would work ... and that's when Mary Gramlich, THE READING REVIEWER (link), suggested I set up a blog.

I tried to register www.sosamerica.blogspot.com ... but it was not available.  So I registered www.sosaloha.blogspot.com ... and the Aloha Spirit was born in Romanceland!

Terri from BODICE RIPPER NOVELS (link) taught me how to create hyperlinks and add pictures ... leading to my second blog, ALOHA ON MY MIND (link), where I posted pictures from our travels around Hawaii, Korea, and China.

We are back in Baltimore and I am thankful for the many friends I made during this journey.   I appreciate your support of SOS Aloha, romance books, and military families!

In honor of my fourth anniversary, I have sent four boxes to deployed personnel.   There will be plenty of books and bling, dear readers, when I return from the 31st annual RT Booklovers' Convention in New Orleans (link).
