Great Aloha Run

The Hawaiian phrase of the day is

Ke kukini me ke aloha pau‘ole.

The race with compassionate love.

Today is the Great Aloha Run ... from its website (at this link):

The GAR, an 8.15-mile foot race, begins at Aloha Tower and finishes in the Aloha Stadium. There are divisions for elites, age groups, wheelchair and handcycle competitors, Sounds of Freedom (military running in formation) and those who just want to walk the course with friends and socialize along the way in the Back of the Pack.

There is a place in the Great Aloha Run for everyone who wants to participate. It is this inclusive philosophy that reflects the Hawaiian name for this race, “Ke kukini me ke aloha pau‘ole”—the race with compassionate love.

It is more than a run ... it is a festival of healthy living.  My son is volunteering with his leadership class to greet runners at Aloha Stadium.   We have to set the alarm for 5 am!   Despite the early hour, I am proud that he is participating in this annual event.

If you were here, what would you do - run?  walk?  volunteer?   One randomly selected commenter wins a book choice from my convention stash.  This giveaway is open to all readers.   Comments are open through Saturday, February 23, 10 pm in Hawaii.  I'll post the winner on Sunday, February 24.

Mahalo,

Kim in Hawaii

  3. Volunteer. Congratulations to your son for his willingness to do so, and to his parents for raising him with that sense of giving.

  4. I know I couldn't run it - would love to try walking - is any of it uphill (lol)? Maybe I just better stick to volunteering & cheering!

  9. This sounds like lots of fun! I would most definitely walk. My husband and I enjoy walking and have done half marathons. No running for me, just not my thing.

Hope your son has a great time volunteering. What a great way to spend the day.

  14. Good for your son! Even if it is early in the morning. :)

I would run only if dogs were allowed. I run with my husky...without him I feel like I am pulling 200lbs. Guess I have gotten used to keeping up with my four legged friend!

  15. I don't think I could even walk the entire distance but I would definitely be inclined to volunteer!

  16. I would walk, or maybe volunteer, depending on whether I thought I could make the whole course. I think I could, but I'd have to see the course. :D

  17. I would definitely have to volunteer. There is no way I could walk, much less run, that far unfortunately. Due to problems with my legs (history of blood clots, damage to veins & nerves) and an accident that screwed up my back & hip, causing problems down my leg & into my foot, I can't stand for long, much less walk or run for any distance.

  20. I think I'd pick walking. I can't run for too long so it's the safer option ;)

  22. It sounds like a wonderful event, even with the 5am wake up!
I'd enjoy either walking or volunteering.

  23. Definitely volunteer since walking too far and running is impossible with my back problems. But how wonderful that your son is doing this. :)

  26. I would either walk or volunteer, I am not much of a runner. My son is like yours, he volunteers for so many things, it is a wonderful trait in a young person. He is always helping with fundraisers on the weekends, most are for school because he is a senior this year.
