The adventure begins when Lucy and Thomas discover they are traveling aboard the same train to Cornwall - Lucy to inspect the cottage for herself and Thomas to return home. During the train ride, Lucy sees Thomas in different light when she learns he befriended her aunt during his self imposed exile to Lizard. Her good opinion of him continues once they arrive in Lizard where it is clear he cares about the villagers. They are suffering from an economic downturn of the fishing industry which supported town for centuries. Lucy is drawn to their plight. However, her sympathy for the villagers does not deter her from securing Heathmore Cottage for herself.  

McQuiston delivers a heartfelt romance between two lovers who are adrift from their peers. Lucy is too much of an independent thinker (like her aunt) to make a love match in the ton. Meanwhile, Thomas carries the guilt of failing his sister who could not face the society's scorn for a scandalous mistake. Yet Lucy and Thomas are two pieces who fit together in Lizard. Thomas is clearly the stronger character as the beta hero - McQuiston creates an emotionally raw man who, as a Marquess, prefers botany to politics. Lucy can be unsympathetic at times with her stubborn behavior. But I forgave her more often than not, recognizing she has been sheltered by her aristocrat family. Together, Thomas and Lucy complete each other as they seek to save those they love in Lizard and themselves.  

The creme de la creme McQuiston's vivid descriptions of the physical landscape and the local culture within Lizard Bay. I grew up visiting my English granny in the West Country. THE SPINSTER'S GUIDE TO SCANDALOUS BEHAVIOR was a comfy trip down memory lane with two characters who enchanted me.

Clare Westmore is on a mission to charm and marry Mr. Alban, the next Duke of Harrington.  As the daughter of a Viscount, she is given entree to London's social season.  Clare learns to dress, dance, flirt, and gossip, all in the effort to make the match of the season.   Yet she twists her ankle while feeding the ducks in the park with her younger siblings.   Despite the injury, Clare insists on attending the ball where she expects to see Mr. Alban.   Her injury sidelines her with the other wallflowers but still draws the attention of Dr. Daniel Merial.   He comes to her aid when it is apparent that her ankle is painful.  Thus begins a dance between two fated lovers as they challenge snobbery between the classes.

McQuiston delivers a heartfelt Victorian romance in which Daniel shines as the humble hero.  He sees Clare for the intellectual beauty that she is; he becomes a positive influence on her younger brother; and he inspires her younger sister to act like a lady.  Daniel also brings fruit shaped marzipan to cheer Clare during her recovery ... a small gesture that chips away at her facade.   Although Clare believes she needs to be an "ornament" to attract a titled husband, she realizes through Daniel that the privileged life may not be her destiny. 

McQuiston herself gives readers our own marzipan treat, so to speak.  She incorporates her knowledge of medicine, Latin, and animals from her experience as a veterinarian.   These tidbits added an extra depth to the story. 

Recommended read for fans of historical romance who appreciate a story outside the ballroom.

Benjamin Franklin fishes for cats ... and Jennifer McQuiston combats Ebola

Ten days ago, Romanceland exploded in anger over The Guardian's publication of YA author Kathleen Hale's essay of how she stalked a reviewer.   Hale attempted to justify her actions and remains unapologetic. Author Alex Hurst offers the most comprehensive review of the situation, Hale vs. Harris, and the Breach of Online Ethics, at this link.

Hale accuses Harris of "catfishing" ... I had to look up this term.  From the Urban Dictionary (link),

A catfish is someone who pretends to be someone they're not using Facebook or other social media to create false identities, particularly to pursue deceptive online romances.

Hale (the author) accuses Harris (the reviewer) of "catfishing" for using a pseudo name to post reviews.  However, it is Hale, in her own words, who engaged in false pretenses to visit Harris at home and contact her at work.   This is a sad day in democracy.

This past weekend, I came across National Treasure on cable TV.  Nicolas Cage stars as a historian who pieces together the clues to the Templar treasure from Benjamin Franklin's Silence Dogood letter.   From PBS.com (link)

During the eighteenth century, it was common for writers and journalists to use pseudonyms, or false names, when they created newspaper articles and letters to the editor.

Silence Dogood was Franklin's first pseudonym, created when he was sixteen years old and serving as a printer's apprentice to his brother James. Silence Dogood was a middle-aged widow who looked at the world with a humorous and satiric eye. Her letters dealt with a range of topics from love and courtship to the state of education in Massachusetts. In all, fifteen Silence Dogood letters were published in James Franklin's New England Courant.

Following Hale's reasoning, Franklin must be a colonial catfisher using the social media of his time - newspapers.   I found the Dogood letters at this link.

These letters are clever insights into an emerging democracy from a 16 year old boy disguised as a middle aged widow.   We could learn much from Franklin's wisdom.   I will share more from Silence Dogood throughout the week.

I submitted a Letter to the Editor of The Guardian.  I hesitated as I was required to submit my name, address, and phone number.  I don't think The Guardian will publish my letter, so I share a portion of it with you, focusing on the single issue that prompted this kerfuffle - a bad review:

I offer an example of how a “bad” review can yield “good” publicity. Elyse at Smart Bitches, Trashy Books posted a D review for Avon author Jennifer McQuiston’s debut historical, What Happens in Scotland. Yet Elyse’s review was thoughtfully written, with a hint of humor.  Elyse's review caught the attention of many readers, including some who thought they might like the book.  I gave 5 stars to What Happens in Scotland.

Quoting Silence Dogood, "I am very sensible that it is impossible for me, or indeed any one Writer to please all Readers at once. Various Persons have different Sentiments; and that which is pleasant and delightful to one, gives another a Disgust."

Six months later, Elyse reviewed the next book in the series, Summer Is For Lovers, giving it an A review. Elyse might not have reviewed the second book had Ms. McQuiston acted like a diva. But that’s not the end of the story. The romance community has rallied around Ms. McQuiston in her day job with the CDC – she is now in Sierra Leone to combat Ebola at its source. You can bet that romance readers are following Ms. McQuiston on Facebook in this global crisis. And they will follow her into her next series. You can’t buy goodwill like this.

In the end, it is free speech that is our National Treasure.

The Honorable Juliana Baxter, daughter of a respected viscount, is the Darling of Drama.   Her father (and only living parent) recognizes that he cannot stop his 19 year old daughter when she sets her sights onto something.   Juliana has set her sights for Eric Channing, the heir to the Earl of Haversham.   During a house party at the Haversham estate, she asks the second son, Patrick, for a dance to ignite Eric's interest in her. Instead, Juliana finds herself interested in Patrick.  Patrick, however, is more interested in setting up a veterinary practice than dancing with marriageable misses.   Yet drama follows Juliana and the drama unfolds the next morning when Juliana claims to have witnessed Patrick shooting (and killing) Eric during the hunt.

Eleven months later, Juliana and her father are back at the Haversham estate, this time to mourn the passing of the Earl.   Concerned for the dowager countess, Juliana travels to Scotland to follow up on a rumor that Patrick is residing (or is that hiding?) in Scotland.  She finds him tending to a wounded dog, informs him of his father's death, and begs him to defend himself so he can care for his family.   Juliana admits that she may have been hasty in fingering Patrick as the shooter.   Taking advantage of her guilt, Patrick persuades Juliana to marry "over the anvil" so she cannot be compelled to testify against him.

Once they return to the Haversham estate, the pieces fall into place as to what really happened that morning during the fatal shooting.   As Patrick assumes the duties as the Earl, he falls in love with Juliana, drama and all.  

Juliana shines in MOONLIGHT ON MY MIND.  She matures from the "drama queen" to a responsible countess as she, too, falls in love with Patrick.   McQuiston delivers a charming romance set after the Regency Era, interjecting humor along the way.   Frankly, the book blurb seemed far fetched - a society miss seeks out someone she accused of murder.  Yet McQuiston peels back the layers of a sinister plot to reveal that all is not what it seems, including Juliana herself.   Rest assured, she maintains a little drama when needed.

MOONLIGHT ON MY MIND features James MacKenzie, the hero from the first book in the series, WHAT HAPPENS IN SCOTLAND.   Since I had read WHAT HAPPENS IN SCOTLAND, I appreciated his appearance as part of the supporting cast.  Yet McQuiston has written MOONLIGHT ON MY MIND as a stand alone book.  Still, MOONLIGHT ON MY MIND will intrigue readers to check out the first two books, including SUMMER IS FOR LOVERS.

Kim:  You hail from Atlanta! What is your favorite sight, sound, and smell of The Big Peach?

Jennifer:  Thanks so much for hosting me today! While I WISH my favorite sight boasted a soothing beach and beautiful sunset, as yours no doubt does, my favorite Atlanta sight is easy: I travel a lot for my day job, and I absolutely love the sight of Atlanta's familiar, jagged skyline as I drive back home from the airport. When I see those skyscrapers rising up, I know I am just a few minutes away from my family.

My favorite sound in the big ATL is probably the local country music station, 94.9 The Bull... Georgia has churned out some amazing country artists, and this station plays all my favorites (especially Kip Moore, a romance author's dream!) 

And favorite Atlanta smell? I confess I love the smell of ripe peaches, as cliche as that sounds... and Georgia peaches are my favorite variety in the world. Unfortunately, they are only in season May-July, so I am usually shoving as many in my mouth as I can during those three blissful months.

Kim:  How did a Veterinarian and infectious disease researcher become a romance author? Did any part of your scientific training help you in writing romance?

Jennifer:  My day job as an infectious disease researcher at the Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is wonderful, but it can also be challenging. Reading has always been a welcome escape, but over time I found it wasn't enough. In some ways, I suspect I became a fiction writer because I needed something to stimulate the creative side of my brain that was languishing on peer-reviewed journals with names like "American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene". I gravitated toward Romance because it is what I prefer to read. I think my scientific training helps me with the research that is such an important part of writing historicals. It has also helped me better manage the criticism that comes with writing for a diverse audience -- it was a bit eye-opening to realize there is every bit as much of a peer review process for fiction writers, only it usually isn't anonymous!

Kim:  Can you share a squeal moment as a two time Golden Heart (GH) finalist? 

Jennifer:  Oh, I can do better than that... I can share the Jim Beam (my favorite adult beverage) along with the squeal! During my first GH final in 2011, I showed up at the conference knowing hardly anyone, but toting a little bottle of Jim Beam around in my purse. When they announced the winners, that bottle was tipped up and then passed around the table to console the other non-winners, too. In 2012, it was almost expected I bring the bottle, only this time I had three critique partners and a whole lot of friends to share the non-winning swig with. In hindsight, it was for the best. My debut novel, WHAT HAPPENS IN SCOTLAND, was written after those two GH-finaling books, and I am so glad this will be the one to introduce me to readers. I have a quirky sense of humor, and I enjoyed letting it fly with this book. In fact, sometimes I have to pinch myself that I am getting published for writing the very snarky retorts and witty dialogue that would have once landed me in trouble in high school.

Kim:  Tell us about WHAT HAPPENS IN SCOTLAND - what inspired it?

Jennifer:  WHAT HAPPENS IN SCOTLAND is your typical "she woke up married" story... only based in 1842 Scotland. It is a fun romp that will (hopefully) keep readers guessing to the end, and it was an absolute blast to write. The idea came to me as I was heading to Vegas to celebrate my 40th birthday, and it occurred to me in one of those "gee whiz" moments that I had never read a historical that tried to do this. I wrote it in two months, and it just poured out of me onto the page.

The heroine, Lady Georgette Thorold, wakes up in bed next to a handsome stranger. Presented with the disturbing evidence of what she might have done, she runs for it... only to realize she must track the mystery man down and press him for an annulment. James MacKenzie isn't sure if he's married or not... all he knows is that the beautiful woman he thought he was protecting has clocked him over the head with a chamber pot and run off with his life savings. Each must piece together the clues of a night gone wrong... and pray that it doesn't get worse.

While some readers might indignantly claim, "That couldn't have happened!", I humbly present the Scottish marriage laws for debate, which in the 1840's were very different from those in England. In fact, Scotland's lax laws on irregular marriages prompted the popularity of Gretna Green as the go-to place for those seeking to elope, and resulted in the occasional abduction and forced marriage of naive young heiresses. The laws of the time enabled anyone to be married at anytime by a citizen witness... and oddly enough elevated the status of the local Scottish blacksmith to matchmaker!

Kim:  What's next for Jennifer McQuiston?

Jennifer:  WHAT HAPPENS IN SCOTLAND is the first in a three-book series. The next book is still untitled, but it is an unrequited love story featuring a tortured hero with an unheroic past, and a heroine determined to snag the man she has loved for years. It is based in Brighton, a seaside resort town that was popular in the Regency and Victorian eras, and it was a lot of fun to craft a historical novel that captures the essence of a passionate summer romance.

The third book in the series (which has also not yet named) features a hero who has been charged with murder, and the heroine he tricks into marriage so she can't testify against him. While darker in content, I can tell you that this current work in progress is proving almost as much fun to write as WHAT HAPPENS IN SCOTLAND.
