I lived in London for nearly four years and it was a great inspiration for my writing. The first time was a two-year stint early on in my marriage, before we had kids (’97-’99). Both my husband and I were working full-time for different investment banks and I went to business school at night. It was a very high-flying expatriate lifestyle—I wouldn’t trade that time for anything. About a year after returning to the U.S., my husband got another job offer from a different investment bank in London, so we moved back (’00-’01). I’d had our first child by then and it was a completely different experience—I hung out with other new moms and occasionally worked part-time. Mostly, I spent my time strolling around the city with my little girl while my husband worked insane hours. It was a different kind of bliss (that I wouldn’t trade either!)
I think the two different experiences influenced the Unruly Royals in lots of ways: I love writing characters who manage demanding jobs in big cities, like my husband and I did in those early days; I love writing characters who manage difficult or unforeseen transitions (from single to couple; from childless to parent; etc.). I also just love imagining my characters (and myself!) strolling through the streets of Mayfair or Chelsea, eating at one of our favorite restaurants, or staying at one of my favorite hotels.
