Aloha to Victoria Pinder and FAVORITE COFFEE, FAVORITE CRUSH

I've been chatting about the RT Booklovers Convention in May (link) ... but first I will be attending Barbara Vey's Reader Appreciation Luncheon in April (link).  One of roommates will be Victoria Pinder.

Victoria Pinder grew up in Irish Catholic Boston then moved to Miami. Eventually, found that writing is her passion.  She always wrote stories to entertain herself. Her parents are practical minded people demanding a job, but when she sat down to see what she enjoyed doing, writing became obvious.  The Zoastra Affair, Chaperoning Paris, Borrowing the Doctor, and Electing Love, Mything the Throne and Favorite Coffee, Favorite Crush will be published in 2014.  Now she is represented by Dawn Dowdle of Blue Ridge Literary Agency.  Also she’s the Vice President for the Florida Romance Writers.

Website: victoriapinder.com

Kim:  Miami - I grew up in the Gables! What is your favorite sight, sound, and smell of the Magic City?

Victoria:  My favorite sight recently was sitting by Biscayne Bay and seeing a pair of dolphins swimming. It was early morning, and it was so peaceful. My usual favorite sights though are the arts shows or the orchid shows that often happen on Sunset Place. It’s central to my far flung friends and we span from North Miami to Homestead (which for anyone not from here is like an hour and a half drive.) I’m not a huge South Beach girl. (I’m a writer which says a lot.) The orchid and art festivals are fun with a bunch of women to go to, and it’s so beautiful. The weather is perfect this time of year to be outside and enjoy.

Kim:  I commend you venturing down different paths to find your passion. I also thank you for teaching. What are you learning from your students? What are your students reading?

Victoria:  I’ll go backwards. I teach them AP US government, AP Macroeconomics and AP US history. So for me they should be doing that homework in the textbook. For the AP Lit students I see them with Oscar Wilde at the moment. For fun, my students all love the young adult dystopian stuff and surprisingly last year Stephen King. I’ve not seen Stephen King novels as popular since maybe I was a teenager, so it’s very strange. Now onto the biggest question. What do I learn from my students. Optimism and faith in humanity. As a criminal lawyer, I was losing faith that good people were out there. It was truly bad. When I quit, this huge change came over me, and I took care of myself again. I like my students. Now I do teach highly motivated, intensely driven students, so they also keep me on my game. I can’t be lazy. There is no time for that, so when I get home, there is no time to be a hypocrite. I expect work, so I should be writing. It’s motivating.

Kim:  My oldest loved AP US Government - he received a five on the test!   Who or what helped you along your path to publishing?

Victoria:  I am determined. I wrote an awful book that no one has seen or will see. At the time of course I thought it was great. So I hopped in my car and drove to RWA Nationals. That trip taught me a lot. That was five years ago. I also became a bit of a conference fan. I flew around the country to attend more conferences and learn. I met big and small authors. Last RWA, thanks to Barbara Vey, I had morning tea with Jayne Ann Krentz which was still the highlight. So I recommend conferences to anyone whose willing to sit and listen and learn. I still consider myself someone with a lot to learn, and I don’t intend to let that change. I also met every one of my publishers from volunteer work, so that helped a lot too.

Kim:  Tell us about FAVORITE COFFEE, FAVORITE CRUSH - what inspired it?

Victoria:  How funny that’s what you picked to read. I wrote the sequel to that mid year last year and I want to get that to the publisher soon. I’m in the midst of a rewrite right now that will help me like the book. I wanted to write books that are set in Miami. If they are set in Miami, then I had to include someone into plastic surgery, so Penny’s mom came first. A gold digger who wanted to break up marriages and flitted to whoever had the biggest wallet. So if she was to be a bad guy then the opposite had to be the good guy. Penny never wanted to be like her mother in any way, and then I asked myself who are her friends. Where did she go to school, and then I met Jay, Sandra, Eva, Michael and Eva. Jay turned out to be the hero, but I have to say Jay’s mother almost stole the book as the villain. I’m not sure where she came from. She just showed up.

Kim:  What's next for Victoria Pinder?

Victoria:  So I’m working on the sequels to finish off my series. The Collins Brothers are all different and fun. I loved my group of friends and I have that contract to get the Mything the Throne out. So I have to finish these. I’m also working on a series right now that’s two out of three books in various stages of being done and the third book is being outlined. This series brought me to my agent, who intends to sell the series. Once I’m done with that, I’ll start something else. I always have ideas to work on.

I am giving away a copy of FAVORITE COFFEE, FAVORITE CRUSH to one randomly selected commenter:

Penny moves back to Miami to start her a job with a list of things to accomplish.
1. Find a place to live.
2. Avoid her gold-digging mother.
3. Reconnect with old high school friends: her best friend Sandra, the dramatic Eva, the dark Michael, her half-brother Wyatt, and her former crush Jay.

Jay may have kept her firmly in the “friend zone”, but that didn’t stop her from wanting more. Her five friends have stood by her through some difficult times and she’ll need their help now to accomplish her first two goals.

As soon as Jay sees Penny, he puts his plan into motion. His investors need to see him with a stable woman, one who isn’t all flash and no brains; Penny fits the bill perfectly. There’s just one hitch—he wants more.

Their pretend date sets off a whirlwind of plots. From mothers who want to control their children’s lives to the loss of her exciting new job, Penny’s world turns upside down. She knows she can overcome all obstacles except one—she’s falling for Jay all over again.

Victoria offers an excerpt from FAVORITE COFFEE, FAVORITE CRUSH:

Chapter One

Jay Marshall pressed his lips together as he held the phone. His hands curled into a ball then straightened. He stared out his bay windows overlooking the ocean. Another beautiful day on the beaches of South Florida, not that he cared. Sunshine never filled him with joy. The humidity outside suffocated the spirit, but somehow, with this deal, he’d break free.

“Yes, you’ll see I mean business, Mr. Danvers. My business plans are long term.”

Danvers sucked in his breath, as if he were doubting the sincerity of Jay’s words, then told Jay. “And I’ll meet your girlfriend. It’s always telling with people from Miami. Flashy women and cars do not make good investments on my end.”

Jay gritted his teeth and tugged at his free ear, but kept the phone on the other. Miami advertised plastic women on the highway as a special brand. Flashy came with the area code. Instead he nodded his head and told the potential investor, “I understand. See you next week.”

He hung up the phone and stared out the window. The brightness showed his reflection and his grim frown. Jay needed to win. His eyes squished together. He’d pay the price for success. He had no other choice.

Jay’s mind raced to his technical girlfriend. Eva was the epitome of flashy, beautiful, and fake. She’d been a friend since high school, and two months ago, they’d ended up dating. On paper the award winning dramatic actress, his money, and their history should be a match. Yet he couldn’t imagine his entire life videotaped.

If he walked away from her, there would be no regrets. His investors hoped he had a nice, sweet woman on the side. His cousin and her friend, Penelope, flashed in his head before he dropped the thought.

He pushed his hand on the glass window before he stepped back into the shadows of his office.

Darkness didn’t suit him either. Nothing stirred inside him anymore, though he craved something. Anything other than boredom from the sticky heat of his life.

He shook his head and poked his head out of his office. His secretary sat there typing. “Call Eva. Set up an appointment for us to talk today.”

With the click of the door knob he rolled up his sleeves. He needed the deal to put his goals in line with his investment portfolio.

His eyes narrowed in on the first words, long term growth.

Long term read to his eyes like a rescue rope. He blinked. Life should be lived with long term goals to reach. Freedom meant change.

Today, he’d break up with Eva. In his heart, he’d always hoped for a woman that tugged at his heart strings. But hopes didn’t earn freedom. He’d prove to himself, and the others, John Jay Marshall came out of the game of life on top.

Blurb for Miami, Mistletoe & Murder (Red Stone Security Series, Book 4)

Fierce and sexy, former Marine Travis Sanchez has always held himself back from the rest of the world, using his tattoos and piercings as armor. But when the woman he’s wanted for months is threatened, he knows it's time to strip away the bad boy image and show her just how much he wants to be with her. As one of Red Stone Security’s best contractors, Travis is trained for almost any situation. But nothing prepares him for the most dangerous threat of all: the one to his heart.

Kind-hearted Noel Baskov’s only wish for the holidays is that her Miami coffee shop has a successful Christmas season. But her focus on work is interrupted when the family of the young girl she mentors is threatened, and the man she’s been lusting after for months steps in to handle it. Unfortunately the danger is far from over. Can this sexy and mysterious warrior protect Noel, or will he be the one to shatter her heart?

Excerpt from Miami, Mistletoe & Murder

It was nearing six, which meant she’d be closing soon so Travis picked up his pace. He passed a few people on the street, all of them bundled up wearing hats and coats, an odd sight in normally sweltering Miami. As he neared her shop, he slowed down and forced himself to get his shit together. For all he knew, she wasn’t even working. Before he’d reached the door, Noel of all people, walked out. Carrying an oversized purse and looking at her cell phone, she didn’t even glance up. He tried to move out of the way but she slammed into him.

Her purse slid off her shoulder as her head snapped back. Wide eyes met his and her mouth formed a small ‘O’ as he steadied her. He gently held her upper arms as she stared at him for a long moment. She was slender, but not exactly fragile. There was a subtle strength he’d picked up on the first time they’d met.

“Travis.” She practically breathed his name. It was like a seductive caress, but then she shook her head and that’s when he realized her pale eyes were bright with unshed tears.

He automatically tensed, hating to see any woman cry, but especially her. “What’s wrong?”

Glancing away from him, she shook her head and bent to pick up her purse.

Kneeling with her, he started gathering some of the things that had fallen out and nearly choked when his fingers wrapped around a box of condoms with a red bow wrapped around it.

“Oh my…that’s not…well, it is mine. One of my friends gave it to me as a gag gift for my birthday.” She snatched it out of his hand and shoved it into the mammoth black bag she called a purse.

Travis struggled to talk, as he always did around her. Thinking about her and condoms in the same sentence was threatening to short-circuit his brain. He hated his reaction because it made him feel like a randy teenager with a crush. Which is basically what he had on her. A giant crush. Her tan cheeks were a bright crimson as she met his gaze again. At least he didn’t see tears in her eyes anymore. He couldn’t handle the thought of her upset.

“You leaving? I thought I might catch you before you got off work.” He was pretty sure his sleep-deprived brain had taken over but he wouldn’t complain. He needed to ask her out and if she rejected him, he’d get over it and find another place to get coffee.

Her face brightened for a moment, her cheeks flushing even darker. “Really?” Before he could answer she sharply shook her head. “Uh, I’ve got to go. I don’t have time to talk right now, Travis. But I’ll see you later.” Now the stress was back, full force. It was so potent, it was practically surging off her in visible waves.

As she started to hurry down the sidewalk to the end of her building where she usually parked, he fell in step with her. “What’s going on, Noel?” He’d never seen her like this before. Normally she had a bright smile for everyone.

She gave him a guarded look and he could practically see the wheels turning in her head. He’d taken out his ear and eyebrow piercings for his last job but he still had visible tattoos and, for some reason, he felt as if she was sizing him up. Finally she sighed as they rounded the corner of the building. “I mentor as a Big Sister and Juanita, that’s my mentee’s name, called me a few minutes ago and she’s really worried. Her mother’s ex-boyfriend has been hanging around lately and she swears he’s never been abusive to her, but he’s been giving her the creeps. He only stops by when her mother is working and she said she thought she saw him drive by more than once.”

Adrenaline punched through him. Noel was tall and lean with a runner’s body so she wasn’t some fragile thing, but still… “You’re going over there by yourself?”

She shot him an annoyed glance. “Yeah.”

“Do you know anything about this guy? If he has a record, or possible weapons or—”

“I don’t know anything other than Juanita is scared. I tried calling the cops but they said they couldn’t do anything other than send a patrol car down the street.”

He admired her protective response but he wasn’t letting her walk into a situation like this alone. “I’m going with you,” he said as they reached her green, four-door hybrid car.

“Excuse me?” She looked up at him now, her keys dangling from her left hand.

Bending down, he lifted his pants pocket where he had a weapon holstered. “I have a permit and you already know who I work for. What harm can it do to have me along? If the guy is there, chances are he’ll be more apt to walk away if I’m with you.” People tended not to fuck with him because of his outward appearance. And if they did anyway, they learned fast that he fought dirty and took down his enemies any way he could. When she bit her bottom lip but didn’t respond, he continued. “Think about what’s best for Juanita.”

At those words, he could see the decision made in her eyes. Even though she still looked slightly unsure, she nodded. “Get in.”

Aloha to Jennifer L Hart and FINAL NOTICE - Book Review

22062783

Mary Gramlich, the Reading Reviewer, introduced me to Jennifer L. Hart through her Laundry Hag Series:

Jennifer L. Hart knows that surviving as military spouse takes persistence, comfort food and a stellar sense of humor. Her books often focus on people who’ve lived the military lifestyle and zany antics of neurotic heroines, who like to eat, drink and have fun. Her works include The Misadventures of the Laundry Hag series, the upcoming Damaged Goods mysteries and Murder Al Dente, coming soon from Gemma Halliday Presents.

Jennifer offered me the opporunity to review her first book in the Damaged Goods mysteries series, FINAL NOTICE:

She's serving up mayhem in the Magic City....

FINAL STRAW
Dishing out bad news is Jackie Parker's job. So when her boss grabs her assets one time too many, she serves him her notice and hopes he chokes on it. There must be a better way for a certified process server to make a living in Miami than working for a lousy lecherous lawyer. Whatever Jackie decides, her number one priority is to spend time with her husband, Luke, preferably without his brother Logan--AKA the Dark Prince.

FINAL WARNING
Despite Logan's objections, Luke asks her to join forces in their own property management team, Damaged Goods. Drawing the line between professional and personal lives proves challenging, especially when Logan serves her an ultimatum--tell Luke the truth about what really happened the night they first met, or he will. Sexual harassment is looking better and better.

FINAL NOTICE
Fester Gomez is three months behind on the rent for his pricey South Beach condo and Damaged Goods is on the job. Either they convince the tenant to pay up or he'll face eviction. The simple task turns deadly when the team discovers Gomez missing and a Jane Doe slowly decomposing in his bathtub. Serving a killer up to justice, wrestling family secrets--it's just another day on the job for Damaged Goods.

Should we shoot them? - Fiona, BURN NOTICE, also set in Miami

I grew up in Coral Gables, a Miami suburb, long before "Magic City" exploded into an international mecca.  I did not realize Miami was nicknamed "Magic City" until I reviewed FINAL NOTICE.   Indeed, Hart delivers magic with a capable heroine who overcame a few hard knocks in her life.   Jackie Parker has enough confidence in herself, and her marriage, to quit her job with a sexist boss.   Her husband, Luke Parker, is transitioning from the Marine Corps to odd jobs with his brooding brother, Logan Parker.   As the three sit around a wobbly kitchen table to ponder their future, Jackie suggests their own property management company named DAMAGED GOODS.

One step forward, two steps back as their first job to evict a tenant leads them to a dead body.  Yet Jackie is an optimist and finds the sunny side of every situation with her affectionate husband, supportive mother-in-law, and loyal friends.   The ensuing mayhem yields plenty of humor along with "ahh" moments as Jackie ends the day with a little romance.

Hart conveys the strength of military families that follows them into civilian life.  Her characters are not perfect yet they are not the "wounded" stereotype in many romances.   They are not rich in wealth but rich in love.   They carry on, valuing their family and upholding their integrity.   I applaud Hart for creating realistic characters that pay loving tribute to those in service.

Recommended read for fans of cozy mysteries, Florida sunsets, and happily ever afters for veterans ... until the next mystery.

I received a print copy from the author for a honest review.

I am giving away a "Magic City" swag package to one randomly selected commenter.  To enter the giveaway,
