Anne Elizabeth is a romance author, comic creator, and a monthly columnist for RT Book Reviews magazine. With a BS in Business and MS in Communications from Boston University, she is a regular presenter at conventions as well as a member of The Author’s Guild and Romance Writers of America. Anne lives with her husband, a retired Navy SEAL, in the mountains above San Diego. Visit her website at www.AnneElizabeth.net.

Anne Elizabeth offers an excerpt from THE SOUL OF A SEAL ...

As he turned the corner, he smacked right into her as if he had conjured her, sending her heading for the floor. He wasn’t a small guy. At six feet and 160 pounds, he was all muscle and could have been a decent wide receiver for any NFL team, even in his early forties. He ran every day, worked out, and had serious stamina for whatever task was at hand.

His hand caught hers, and with one tug he had her safely in his arms. He cradled her against him. He murmured in her ear, “Sorry about that.” His first instinct was to be polite and distant, but this contact brought a wave of protectiveness with it that made him even more uncomfortable. He needed to keep his perspective. “I always seem to be apologizing to you.”

“Must be something about me,” she murmured against his chest. Her body changed from pliant to stiff almost instantly. They were locked together for several seconds.

“Guess so.”

Realizing that she had to be at least five feet ten inches was kind of nice. It meant he wouldn’t have to bend down when he kissed her. Shit, there went his libido. He was attracted to her. Now he was going to have to be careful he didn’t compromise the mission.

Bennett righted her, and his hands dropped away from her gorgeous form. “Dr. Warren…”

Kimberly looked up at him. Her hands settled on her hips. Frowning, she said, “Captain, it was me. I wasn’t watching where I was going. I needed to consult with you anyway.”

“You were…looking for me…”

“I…I have files for you.” The way she was groping for words meant he definitely had an effect on her. At least they were both in the same boat. Besides, his gut told him that she was an ally, wanting to get the shuttle off the ground and to find out who had killed the SEALs.

She pushed several files into his hands. “If you’ll excuse me.” She stepped around him, making a wide arc. Before she rounded the next corner, she stole a glance at him and blushed.

He smiled at her. Damn, he couldn’t remember the last time he’d been so drawn to a woman. The scent of lavender still filled his senses, and a hint of something else. Not rosewater. What was it, jasmine? Mmm, intoxicating.

Happy 241st Birthday, United States Navy!

Stand Navy out to sea, fight our battle cry!
We'll never change our course so vicious foes steer shy-y-y-y!
Roll out the TNT, anchors aweigh!
Sail on to victory, and sink their bones to Davy Jones, hooray!

Anchors Aweigh, my boys, Anchors Aweigh!
Farewell to Foreign Shores, we sail at break of day-ay-ay-ay;
Through our last night ashore, drink to the foam,
Until we meet once more, here's wishing you a happy voyage home!

Blue of the mighty deep, Gold of God's great sun;
Let these our colors be, Till All of time be done-n-n-ne;
On seven seas we learn, Navy's stern call:
Faith, courage, service true, With honor over, honor over all.

RWA Recap - The Joy of Writing and Walking the Land

Last Thursday, RWA was in full swing. I moderated two workshops and I share them with you:

The Joy of Writing (WRITER’S LIFE)

Speakers: Anne Elizabeth, Cathy Maxwell, and Julie Rowe

Best-selling, award-winning, and perpetually positive authors share how they savor their passion for writing while navigating the pitfalls of the publishing industry.

I submitted the proposal for this panel based on Anne Elizabeth's mantra to always find joy. The authors shared the challenges in their lives, both personal and professional. They offered techniques to take care of themselves and inspire the creative process.

I commend Julie for sharing the semi-colon tattoo on her arm; it represents it isn't over, just at a pause.

176837782624235923366562

Walking the Land: Building a World That Makes Readers Feel They’ve Visited Your Setting (CRAFT)

Speaker: Jodi Thomas

Discover how to create the essentials to make the world of your stories come alive. Help your readers "walk the land" with you so they feel as if they’ve visited your setting, not just read about it.

I volunteered to moderate this panel since I admire Jodi and her writing. She uses the western setting for her historical and contemporary books. Jodi "walked" through how she researches her setting by walking among rescued horses, listening to ranch hands, and lifting items abandoned along the wagon trail. She taught the audience (and myself) that emotion comes from the five senses.

Authors, find someone who bought the conference recordings and listen to these workshops!

Readers, where have you "walked" recently? I walked all over the USS Midway in San Diego and "heard" the stories from sailors.  One randomly selected commenter wins a book choice from my convention stash. Comments are open through Saturday, July 23, 10 pm in Baltimore. I'll post the winner on Sunday, July 24.

Wednesday's Warriors - Navy Tour and Literacy Signing

Last Wednesday, before the RWA Annual Convention kicked off, we searched for SEALs ...

Join Navy veteran Cathy Maxwell, Navy spouse Anne Elizabeth, and Air Force veteran Kim Lowe for a driving tour of Navy Base Coronado. We’ll drive by historic sights such as “Camp Trouble,” where Naval aviation was born. We’ll walk in the footsteps of the first commander’s wife, Wallis Warfield, who later became the Duchess of Windsor. Today, Navy Base Coronado is a consortium of eight installations providing support for 16 helicopter squadrons, two fixed wing squadrons, two aircraft carriers, four SEAL Teams, and Navy Expeditionary Combat Command squadrons. Our tour will give you a glimpse of military life with a retired Navy SEAL as our narrator.

I thank those who made this possible - Heather AshbyAJ BrowerAnne Elizabeth, and Cathy Maxwell

USS Theodore Roosevelt

The highlights include ...

- We drove by the aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71)

- We watched helicopters hover over the flightline.

- We noticed decoy coyotes on the flightline to keep the birds away.

- We wiggled our toes on Breakers Beach.

- We spotted the current BUD/S class repelling over the sand dunes along the Silver Strand.

- We stopped at McP's Irish Pub for refreshments; the pub is owned by former SEAL Greg McPartlin, author of COMBAT CORPSMAN.

On Wednesday night, RWA hosted its annual Literacy Signing, raising over $39,000 for literacy programs (and over $1M as a cumulative total for the signings). RWA donated several boxes of books to the USO - thank you!

I thank my sisters in arms - veterans turned authors - Heather Ashby, AJ Brower, Megan J., Merline Lovelace, Anna Richland, and Tamara W. for boxing up the books for our military families.

I am giving away a book choice from my convention stash to one randomly selected commenter. To enter the giveaway,

1. Leave a comment about your favorite beach - Breakers Beach reminded me of Barking Sands on the Navy's Pacific Missile Range on Kauai.

2. Comments are open through Saturday, July 23, 10 pm in Baltimore.

The Best Cheer - Shout Out in Books

23014649

Earlier this week, I had a successful trip to Washington DC (link).  The next day, not so much.  I showed up at a facility that was not hosting a new hire fair that week.  Arg ... I combated DC traffic for nought!

Later in the afternoon, I walked to the bank, tripped over a displaced sidewalk, and scrapped up my knee.  I hobbled home and cracked open Diane Kelly's LAYING DOWN THE PAW, Book 3 in the Paw Enforcement series.  I enjoyed the first two books in the series, PAW ENFORCEMENT (link) and PAW AND ORDER (link).

I often read the acknowledgement page - I am always curious who inspired the author. Yet I landed on the "praise" page with reviewer's quotes:

Funny and acerbic, the perfect read for lovers of Janet Evanovich. - Librarian and Reviewer

Humor, romance, and surprising LOL moments. What more can you ask for? - Romance and Beyond

Fabulously fun and funny! - Book Babe

An Engaging read that I could not put down.  I look froward to the next adventure of Megan and Brigit! - SOS Aloha on PAW ENFORCEMENT

Sparkling with surprises. Just like a tequila sunrise.  You never know which way is up or out! - Romance Junkies on PAW AND ORDER.

Wait a minute ... SOS Aloha is me!  Thank you Diane Kelly and St. Martin's Press for including my reviewer quote!

18404165Paw and Order (Paw Enforcement, #2)

This is the first time my blog name has appeared in a book.  My personal name has appeared several times.  In 2007, I won a character's name from Bobbi Smith at the RT Booklovers' Convention in Houston.  I am a school marm in WANTED! THE HALF BREED. My college friends thought I should have been the saloon wench ... they know me well!

Wanted: The Half-breed

In 2013, Anne Elizabeth thanked me, along with other volunteers, for supporting military families in ONCE A SEAL.

In 2014, Cathy Maxwell dedicated THE BRIDE SAYS MAYBE to me,

For my friend Kim Adams Lowe, I am wealthy in my friends.

I am also rich in friends - fellow readers and authors. I am giving away a book choice from my convention stash. To enter the giveaway,

1. Leave a comment about a secondary character you could play in a book.

For Diane Kelly's Paw Enforcement series, I could be the Police Chief's administrative assistant, petting Brigit every time she comes into the office!

2. Comments are open through Saturday, April 23, 10 pm in Baltimore.

3. I'll post the winner on Sunday, April 24.

RWA in San Diego - Driving Tour of Navy Base Coronado

I previously posted that I will be attending the Romance Writers' America (RWA) Annual Conference in 2016 (link). I was invited by two friends to participate in a special driving tour of Navy Base Coronado on Wednesday, July 13, from 10 am - 2 pm:

We will make several stops, including Breakers Beach for a group photograph and the Navy Exchange for lunch.

RWA posted the link on Thursday afternoon ... and the tour sold out within an hour.  Who knew romance writers wanted to see steel gray buildings?  Actually, I think it is the retired Navy SEAL narrator who inspired the sellout.

I would like to thank those who made this possible - my cohosts Anne Elizabeth and Cathy Maxwell. I also appreciate the writers connected to the military who are sponsoring the tour - including Heather Ashby and AJ Brower.

For those who are not able to participate in the driving tour ... how about a virtual tour?  Navy Base Coronado occupies the north side of Coronado Island, Spanish for "Crowned One". Indeed, Coronado is the king of aviation history.  From the National Park Service (link),

The Naval Air Station, San Diego, Historic District, located on North Island in California, is associated with broad national and regional themes in the history of military aviation, representing the principle administrative and residential core of one of the earliest naval air stations in the United States, and the first on the West Coast. Climatic conditions, and the characteristics of flat terrain, good beaches and protected stretches of water, attracted the aviation pioneer and Wright Brothers' competitor, Glenn H. Curtiss, to North Island in 1910. Through the intervention of a local flying club, the landowner, the Coronado Beach Company, was persuaded to permit Curtiss to use North Island for his Aviation School.

In December 1910, the Navy assigned its first pilot, Lt. T.G. Ellyson, to be trained by Curtiss at his school on North Island. The Navy established its first naval aviation unit at Annapolis, Maryland, in September 1911. However, because winters in the Northeast precluded flight operations, North Island was chosen for the aviation unit's winter quarters. In 1912 "Camp Trouble," as it was called, was established on the northeast corner of North Island, a site now encompassed by the Naval Air Station, San Diego, Historic District. Consisting of three airplanes, three pilots, three tents and some mechanics, this group stayed until April, then returned east. The Navy would not return to North Island until 1917.

Next week:  The Army Signal Corps comes rolling along to North Island.

I am giving away a book choice from my convention stash to one randomly selected commenter.  To enter the giveaway,

1. Leave a comment about "Camp Trouble" - do you have a funny story about camping?  I haven't camped since I was a Girl Scout.  When I accompanied my youngest son on a Webelos campout with the Boy Scouts, I stayed in a cabin (link).

2. Comments are open through Saturday, April 9, 10 pm in Baltimore.

3. I'll post the winner on Sunday, April 10.

Wednesday's Warriors - Aloha to Anne Elizabeth and A SEAL FOREVER

I am currently reading and loving Anne Elizabeth's A SEAL FOREVER, Book 3 of the West Coast Navy SEALs ...

Even a hero needs someone to believe in him...

Parkour instructor Maura Maxwell has always denied her attraction for her bachelor neighbor because she’s seen his revolving door of women and doesn’t want to become another notch on his belt. But the man who rescues her from a sudden storm isn’t the one she thinks she knows—he’s Master Chief Declan Swifton of SEAL Team Five, and he literally sweeps Maura off her feet.

Just as his teasing and tenderness start to work their way into Maura’s heart, Declan and his team are called in for a dangerous op in the Middle East. The man who returns is facing the toughest fight of his life, and he needs Maura by his side more than ever…

A Navy SEALs Fun Fact from Anne Elizabeth

Being a Navy SEAL wife, or a wife in general, is not always easy. As the saying goes, “The Only EASY DAY was Yesterday.” But, love and determination matter. Whatever you dedicate yourself to every day, will grow stronger.

A heartfelt tribute to Navy SEAL Adam Brown
on Pearl Harbor's Dog Beach

Sourcebooks is hosting a special giveaway at this link ... and offers an excerpt from A SEAL FOREVER:

Master Chief Declan Swifton of SEAL Team Five rolled over the side of the Rigid-hulled Inflatable Boat and slid soundlessly into the Pacific Ocean. The RIB took off without even a comment from the operator, leaving Declan to sink farther into the drink.

The temperature cooled as he swam away from the surface. Fish skirted the edges of his thighs, small shimmers of movement against his skin. He scissor-kicked his way forward. The ocean currents caught him, dragging him in the direction they wanted to go, toward shore. He lay with his arms at his sides, frog-kicking only. Above him, he could see the afternoon sunlight glistening and frothy foam chasing away the glassy surface. Down here things were different…calmer. Peaceful, in a way few souls would understand, and yet he knew that even he would have to surface soon.

His lungs would start to ache and burn, his gut would begin to feel as if it would cave in, and that would force him to either head topside or drink in the salt water. But there was still time. This was the water in front of Imperial Beach and the apartment he lived in. He knew it very well.

Scanning the ocean floor, he gauged it would be about thirty seconds until he reached one of the many rocky sandbars out here. He’d have to pull up before then, or the force of the current would smack him against the side.

As his body began to complain, he used both arms and legs to draw himself upward. Breaking the surface, he opened his mouth and drew in air like a thirsty man would gulp water.

The waves bounced him like a buoy. The tide was coming in and the wind was picking up momentum. Looking at the sky to the east, he could see that there would most likely be a storm today. Over his should, to the west, he spied a wave coming his way large enough to take him to shore. It would reach him in about thirty seconds.

Dec took a long, slow breath and appreciated the sun dropping into the horizon. The colors were extraordinary; orange and gold dappled the horizon as the blazing ball of light attempted to sink before the moon lifted higher in the sky.

His hands flexed, cupping the water. It had been a hot day, and the sun’s rays had heated the top of the ocean, making the surface feel like a warm bath, loosening his muscles. Three months ago, he’d been in waters so frigid, with actual ice caps—the memory still made him cold. But here, the Pacific Ocean off California’s Imperial Beach, was a slice of heaven.

Coming in from the east were some nasty-looking cumulonimbus clouds. Seeing the lightning arc way off toward the distant desert, he decided it was time to go in, and right on cue, here came a perfect wave.

Swimming at top speed, Declan pushed his way through another changing current, one that sought to drag him into faster-moving waters. He went over a higher sandbar, having no intention of going to Mexico today, and increased the reach of his stroke. With single-mindedness he worked his way into the more placid surf as he homed in on a large stretch of beach.

The SEAL felt a few sea lions swimming around him, and one nosed him in the gut and another in his back a few times, assessing whether or not he’d play. Not this time, my friends. He continued swimming without engaging. If he stopped to play, he’d be out there for hours.

Switching to the breaststroke, his arms protested. His platoon had switched their training this month to desert-warfare techniques, and he’d been sweating his balls off in the heat. He managed to learn a thing or two, even now, after all of his years in the Teams. But it felt good to be back in the ocean, his element. He’d live in the deep blue like a Jules Verne character if he could.

Aloha to Ten Books with Staying Power (part 2)

Readers are challenging each other on Facebook to list 10 books that have "stayed with you".  Continuing my list from yesterday (link),

6.  Toni Anderson's DANGEROUS WATERS (link).   Once again I stepped outside my comfort zone to review a romantic suspense ... and I was rewarded with a pager turner set in Barklay Sound on the Pacific Coast.   The bonus - a capable Canadian heroine locks horns with a mysterious Canadian hero who previously served in the Canadian Special Forces - a pleasant departure from a genre flooded US military characters.

I also recommend the next book in the series, DARK WATERS (link).

15722295

7.  Anne Elizabeth's A SEAL AT HEART (link):  Anne Elizabeth delivers a heartfelt romance between a Navy SEAL struggling with the aftermath of a mission and a physical therapists who helps him heal.  I appreciate that Anne Elizabeth takes the reader into the heart of the warrior and the mind of a woman to honor the military families.

I also recommend the next book in the series, ONCE A SEAL (link).

14296743

8.  Anne Cleeland's DAUGHTER OF THE SUN-GOD (link).

I wrote a short five star review to get right to point that Anne Cleeland scores a bull's eye with this action adventure set in Regeny Egypt, yes, Regency Egypt.   Hattie Blackhouse travels to Paris then Cairo in search of her parents last seen on a archaeology dig in the Valley of the Kings.   Along the way, she is coddled (and threatened) by the British, French, Egyptians, and one mysterious man as all believe Hattie holds the key to Napolean's triumph (or defeat).

I met Anne at RWA and passed along my praise for DAUGHTER OF THE GOD-KING.  She mailed me a print copy of the first book in the series, TAINTED ANGEL (link).  I look forward to reading it.

Daughter of the God-King (Regency, #2)

9.  Jill Marie Landis' MAI TAI ONE ON (link).   My list would not be complete without one Hawaiian romance.  MAI TAI ONE ON is an opus of the heart from beloved romance author Jill Marie Landis.  Set on Kauai's North Shore, MAI TAI ONE ON is a cozy mystery for a California divorcee who arrives on the island to help her uncle turn around his legendary Tiki Goddess Bar.   It becomes an action adventure when the Hula Maidens, the local halau (troupe), join the hunt for a killer.   It ends with an unexpected romantic moment that captures the magic of the Hawaiian Islands.

11882205

10.  Cathy Maxwell's THE DEVIL'S HEART (link):  My list started with Cathy Maxwell and ends with the master storyteller of Regency Romance. THE DEVIL'S HEART is Book 3 in the Chattan Curse series. The Chattan family lives (and dies) by a 17th century curse:

When a Chattan male falls in love, strike his heart with fire from above...

Two Chattan brothers - Neal and Harry - have fallen in love despite the risk. Their younger sister, Margaret, travels to Scotland in search of the Book of Curses to save her brothers. She finds the last living male descendent, James, who reluctantly assists her .. for a price.   James doesn't believe in magic but he is desparate to help his clan. As Margaret and James fall in love themselves, the Witch has other plans for the fated couple.  Maxwell pulls out all the stops with an unexpected twist in the climatic ending that demonstrates love "always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always preserves", 1 Corinthians 13: 6-7.

I read the last third of THE DEVIL'S HEART on Turtle Beach along Oahu's North Shore.  During the dramatic scene, the beach's famous turtle Brutus emerged from the ocean to the delight of the tourists.   It was an extraordinary moment.

THE DEVIL'S HEART can be read as a stand alone novel, but I recommend the first two books, LYON'S BRIDE (link) and THE SCOTTISH WITCH (link).

Aloha to Anne Elizabeth and ZOMBIE POWER 2

The multi-talented Anne Elizabeth is getting ready for the San Diego Comic Con, where ZOMBIE POWER 2 will be a Comic-Con International Exclusive 2014:

Welcome to the Zombie Power series! The series is based in Greenwich, Connecticut, and most of the action takes place at The Academy (For Girls) and The Wick (For Boys). Zombies are springing up everywhere and our protagonists the Greenwich Gals (Tiffany, Sandra & Izzy) must make their way to the Academy and find a way to solve the crisis. With twists and turns, and some particularly voracious Zombinistas—fashion-plates made into zombies--the Greenwich Gals have their work cut out for them.

Incorporating the themes of working together, self-empowerment, and the usefulness of common sense, these Gals have a serious battle on their handles, and the first order of business is...staying alive.

ZOMBIE POWER 2 is a limited print run with only 1000 copies ... and Anne Elizabeth is generously giving away three here at SOS Aloha!   Anne Elizabeth will personalize and autograph ZOMBIE POWER 2 for each winner.  To enter the giveaway,
