As RWA members checked out of the hotel, I lugged one more round of boxes to the post office. Cathy Maxwell and Mary Gramlich joined me for our walk down 8th Street to NYC's historic central post office - it looked like the Supreme Court! We walked back up 7th Avenue - the Fashion District. We enjoyed one more lunch at Cafe Un Deux Trois - for the baguettes - before we went out separate ways.

I requested the EMT-turned-driver for my return trip to LaGuardia. I literally grab a family out of the taxi line - the family of Marilyn Brant, author of women's fiction. Marilyn noted her fall release was titled A SUMMER IN EUROPE from Kensington Books. I love Europe so naturally I invited her to be my guest to promote this book!
No sooner had I parted ways with Marilyn did I find more romance authors at my Southwest gate. The Detroit area authors were chatting with the incomparable Victoria Alexander. It was cream on top of a great week at RWA in NYC.
Hubby picked me up in Columbus and we drove back to his parents' house in Dayton. MIL took my children to see Cars II at the drive in ... when they came home, they were full of stories of adventure during my absense. I had a blast at RWA ... but I was glad to be back with my family, even if it was not home in Hawaii.
For my Grand Finale of RWA Recaps, I am giving away a book from one of the more visible authors at RWA - Sherrilyn Kenyon. She spoke at the award luncheon; attracted the longest line at the literacy fair; and gave away books during two publishers' signings. I am giving away her book from the awards ceremony - BORN OF SHADOWS:
In the universe where the League is law, most live in fear. We fight back. Welcome to a world where corrupt assassination politics dominate everyone. It's kill or be killed.
To enter the giveaway,
1. Leave a comment RWA, NYC, and/or Sherrilyn Kenyon.
2. This giveaway is open to all readers.
3. Comments are open through Thursday, July 14, 2011. I'll post the winners on Friday, July 15 (note the early posting as I have a wedding to attend next weekend ... then it's home to Hawaii).
Mahalo,
Kim in Dayton
Kim,
ReplyDeletelove your reports from the RWA, wish I could have been there.
I met Sherrilyn in 2006 here in Germany at a small Romance conference. She is a real fascinating lady and we had a long talk about Middle English literature etc. I really love her books no matter if Paranormal or Historicals
That post office used to be open 24 hrs a day, but it's still open 7 days a week. I love Sherrilyn's BAD series.
ReplyDeleteI have not read much Sherrilyn Kenyon. Time to rectify that; fingers crossed.
ReplyDeleteThat looks like the post office with the inscription "Neither rain, nor snow, nor gloom of night..." (or, for the Terry Pratchett fans out there, "glom of nit").
ReplyDeleteI'm going to NYC later this year. No authors though, just family.
I would love to one day attend RWA and New York. I always wanted to go to Ellis Island.

I love historic buildings, especially those that are still in use and standing. If I was visiting New York or anywhere for that matter it would to all the historic places. I would just picture someone like me fifty, one-hundred or even more years ago doing the same thing.
ReplyDeleteKim -
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like you had a great time in NYC at RWA and met a lot of fantastic authors. I'm sure made many friends you will have for a lifetime.
It sounds like Sherrilyn Kenyon really made a big impression on you at the award luncheon or that she had a long line at the literacy fair! She is a terrific and her books have such diversity that she attracts readers that love all different genres.
My favorite books by Sherrilyn was her Brotherhood of the Sword series. I'm sure many of her newer readers have never had the opportunity to read this wonderful series and should be sure to check it out.
Due to Sherrilyn's generosity you have books to share with all of us and our thanks go out to you for thinking about us while on your whirlwind time in NYC!
I love Sherrilyn's books. I actually met her last year at the RWA signing and she was so nice. Her books were some of the first ones that I read when I began reading adult books.

Sounds like you had a great time at RWA!
ReplyDeleteI have not read any of Sherrilyn's books but they do sound really good. As for NYC, I would love to go there but considering the panic attacks that I have from being in crowds, I don't think that would be good.
ReplyDeleteI love love love love Sherrilyn Kenyon!! Out of everything you did at RWA, I'm most jealous of the fact that you got to see Sherrilyn!
ReplyDeleteI love Sherilyn's stories and I love drive-ins.
ReplyDeleteI haven't read any Sherilyn's books. would love to try one :)
ReplyDeletei love sherryln, her books was one of the first , i started knowing the author of, for my parapnormal kind, her and maggie shayne
ReplyDeleteOh Kim. Sounds like a fun time was had by all at RWA. Can't wait until next year. Hopefully I'll be able to go. At least to the signing.
ReplyDeleteCoincidence? My brother lives in Dayton.
I still have yet to read a book by Ms. Kenyon but they're on my wish list.
Hi Kim,
ReplyDeleteWell you definitely had a great time in NYC. I hope to go next year for sure. I also love Sherrilyn Kenyon's books as they were one of the first in Paranormal that I read. Acheron was by far a great read, but difficult to get through because of the emotions it brought out.
Love her Dark Hunters. Like Artemis I blinked when I read Drive-in movie, we don't have anymore here either. That's awesome. Grew up going to Drive-ins with parents and when older my dates. :)
