One word frees us of all the weight and pain in life. That word is love. - Sophocles
Michele is an American living in England. Sigh. She is also blessed with a talent to entice readers into her world of contemporary romance. Her publisher, Notting Hill Press, offered me the opportunity to review her new novella, WEIGHTLESS:
Sometimes looks can be deceiving
Annabel's not surprised when nobody recognizes her at her 10 year reunion. The spotty fat teen nicknamed AnnaBall by the school bullies is long gone. But standing on the edge of the popular crowd, she still feels like that girl. That is, until Jack, her teen crush, starts flirting with her. Much to her amusement, he has mistaken her for Christy Blake, Annabel's chief tormenter before she moved to France in their last year.
It's just a bit of fun at first, letting Jack believe she's Christy. After all, he was nuts about her before she said au revoir to England. And when he asks Annabel out, the fun becomes something even more interesting. The more they date the deeper they fall for each other. So what if Annabel has to fib a little to keep up the façade?
As the lies start compounding, and she realizes that they're falling in love, she has to tell him who she really is. But she'll lose the love of her life if she does.

I read this 40 page digital book while waiting at the pharmacy. My son kept asking why I was laughing ... because I so relate to Annabel's fear at the reunion. She jumps at the the chance to be someone else ... only to find out that "Christy" was allergic to cats (after she pets one), proudly displayed her tattoo (that is absent on her arm) and spoke French (her date assumes she can read the menu at a French restaurant):
The words were right there on the menu but I had not idea how to pronounce them. Mille feuilles? Was that Milly Fuilly, the French cousin to the 80s lip synching duo? I had no clue.
While Annabel is living large at night, she is a nutritionist by day, counseling an overweight teen with the same confidence issues that Annabel faced in high school. Her work reminds her that she should be true to herself in finding love.
