Historic Hawaiian state flag on display in Lahaina, Maui. |
On Friday, Hawaii celebrated its 56th birthday as the 50th state. The state motto is:
Ua Mau ke Ea o ka Aina i ka Pono
The life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness.
On Friday, my oldest son joined Air Force ROTC at the University of South Florida.
On Sunday, we flew home from Tampa. As I unpacked our luggage, my husband procured a birthday cake for my 50th birthday (I am going on a cruise with college friends who also turned 50 this year ... pictures to come!)
Today is the birthday of Duke Kahanamoku - an Olympic swimming champion, the father of surfing, and the Ambassador of Aloha.
In Hawai’i we greet friends, loved ones and strangers
with Aloha, which means with love.
with Aloha, which means with love.
Aloha is the key word to the universal spirit of real
hospitality, which makes Hawai’i renowned as the
world’s center of understanding and fellowship.
Try meeting or leaving people with Aloha.
You’ll be surprised by their reaction.
I believe it and it is my creed.
Aloha to you.
Dog Beach near Fort Kamehameha |
Today, we closed on a house closer to my youngest son's high school. We bought it from a retired Army family who previously lived on Fort Kamehameha, Hawaii (now part of Hickam AFB). When we first looked at the house, I spotted chalk writing in the garage, "Aloha" and "Shoots". It made sense when we met the family at the closing. I believe the Aloha Spirit will fill our new home!
Do you have any good news to share? One randomly selected commenter wins Aloha swag plus a book choice from my convention stash. Comments are open through Saturday, August 29, 10 pm in Baltimore. I'll post the winner on Sunday, August 30.

ReplyDeleteGood news on my front.... hmmm. We got our youngest moved into her apartment for school and it looks like the new roomates will get along with the old set (fingers crossed), and our son is narrowing down his choices for applying to grad school (but still a long journey ahead).
My two oldest grandkids just started second grade and they're both doing well! Congrats on your new home, Kim.
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday Kim and congrats on the new house. I'm happy that I just purchased my airfare for a Thanksgiving trip home to California to spend the holiday with my sister. And I'll stop off in Las Vegas on the way to see my son and dil. Yay!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on all the good changes in your life. I do believe the Aloha spirit will be strong in your new home. You are rapidly cruising to the empty nest period of your life.
ReplyDeleteFor us, this summer will not go down as one of our better ones. It started nicely with RT in Dallas and a 3 to 4 week trip planned for afterwards. It was terminated early for a family illness and went down rapidly afterwards. We have attended 6 funerals in 2 months. In May, we were hiking in the mountains in TX, AZ, and NM. Now I can barely walk. Hopefully, we can get that cleared up before our trip in September. .
Congrats on it all.....your son, your birthday, your new house. Happy belated birthday!
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday! I too turned 50 this year! Congrats on new house too!
ReplyDeletetaking a son or daughter to college is a bittersweet time - it's wonderful that they are growing into their own, but you'll miss them.
